About the Job

We are looking for a highly skilled Heavy Equipment Operator to join our team in Gastonia, NC. As a member of our Public Works department, you will be responsible for operating a variety of heavy equipment to maintain and improve the City's infrastructure.

Responsibilities:

  • Operate and maintain heavy equipment such as dump trucks, backhoes, and asphalt pavers.
  • Pour and finish concrete for various construction projects.
  • Sweep streets, vacuum catch basins, and clean storm drain pipes.
  • Perform grading for site preparation and haul and stockpile various materials.
  • Assist in pouring concrete for stormwater structures.
  • Perform rough carpentry work, including setting forms and installing rebar/wire mesh.
  • Construct and perform maintenance and repairs on ditches, swales, and other open drainage channels.
  • Mow rights-of-way, trim sight distance problems, low-hanging limbs over sidewalks and streets, trim around guardrails, edges sidewalks and curbs.
  • Assist in cultivating, planting, watering, mulching, and spraying flowers, plants, shrubs, trees, and turf areas.
  • Operate light automotive and mechanical equipment in connection with the above tasks.
  • As a trainee, operate heavy equipment under supervision.
  • Work around heavy construction equipment and all types of traffic.
  • Repair tools and equipment of a less complex nature and perform general maintenance on all small equipment.
  • Use small hand tools, including shovels, rakes, lutes, rakes, picks, pruning tools, floats, tools for edging, jointing, and stamping concrete, etc.
  • Operate edger, string trimmer, chain saw, blowers, etc.
  • Perform rough carpentry work.
  • Raise utility structures for resurfacing, utility cuts, patching, and asphalt maintenance.
  • Lay brick and block.
  • When not operating equipment, perform semi-skilled work on the job-site as a laborer, using small hand tools.
  • Perform various landscaping tasks.
  • Perform daily pre-trip inspections on assigned vehicles and equipment (90%).
  • Snow and ice storm removal and other storm debris removal (10%).
