Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Building Inspector to join our team at the Town of Smyrna. As a Building Inspector, you will be responsible for ensuring that buildings and sites in our town comply with local building codes and ordinances.

Key Responsibilities
  • Conduct thorough inspections of buildings under construction, alteration, or repair to ensure compliance with approved plans and codes.
  • Review building permits, blueprints, and other documents to ensure conformance to codes and regulations.
  • Discuss complex building plans with contractors, property owners, and the public to ensure understanding and compliance.
  • Assist with building inspection and licensing processes as needed.
  • Maintain accurate records of inspections performed, including conditions found, actions taken, and recommendations made.
  • Ensure developer compliance with conditions imposed as part of the approval process.
  • Review building plans for code compliance and ensure that all necessary permits are obtained.
  • Meet expectations for quality service and delivery dates with good time management.
  • Perform related work as required by the Department Head.
Requirements
  • Graduation from a college or university with a degree in architecture, engineering, or a related field.
  • Two years of general construction experience, or additional experience in construction or enforcement of building codes and ordinances may be substituted for college education.
  • Valid driver's license.
  • Ability to obtain and retain ICC Residential Building Inspector and ICC Mechanical Inspector certifications within 18 months of hire.
  • Pass a criminal background and driving record investigation.
Working Conditions

This is light work requiring the exertion of up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects. Work requires climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, walking, fingering, and grasping. Vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word. Hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels. Visual acuity is required for preparing and analyzing written or computer data, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, use of measuring devices, operation of motor vehicles or equipment, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities. Mental acuity is required to make rational decisions through sound logic and deduction. The worker is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions, and atmospheric conditions.
