Deputy Defender

We are seeking a highly skilled and dedicated Deputy Defender to join our team at the Oregon Public Defense Commission. As a Deputy Defender, you will provide court-appointed legal representation and advocacy to indigent clients charged with criminal offenses in the circuit courts of Oregon.

• Interview and communicate with clients to ensure effective representation and advocacy.
• Conduct thorough research and analysis of legal issues, including novel arguments, to develop well-reasoned and analytical sound arguments.
• Prepare and argue pretrial motions, affidavits, and legal memoranda to protect clients' rights and interests.
• Represent clients in dispositional and/or sentencing advocacy and post-trial motions, excluding appeals.
• Make informed decisions regarding jury or bench trials, and provide effective advocacy during trial proceedings.
• Represent clients in interlocutory/appellate proceedings, including defending against state interlocutory appeals of pretrial motions.

• Graduation from an accredited law school and membership in the Oregon State Bar or eligibility for membership through reciprocity or a program approved by the Oregon State Bar.
• Meets or exceeds OPDC standards for court-appointed counsel in Misdemeanor Cases, Lesser Felony Cases, or Major Felony Cases.
• Valid Oregon Driver's license.
