Your Role:
In collaboration with the medical team, you will be responsible for operating extracorporeal circulation devices during surgical interventions that necessitate the support or temporary replacement of a patient's circulatory or respiratory functions. Your responsibilities will include:

  • Preparing, administering, and monitoring the flow of prescribed solutions, including cardioplegic solutions and hemodilution pump prime compositions, utilized during cardiac surgeries.
  • Assessing patient variables such as hematocrit, body size, and osmolarity to accurately mix solutions for infusion into coronary arteries or to eliminate air from bypass apparatus.
  • Setting automatic controls and monitoring meters and gauges to ensure proper equipment functionality.
  • Operating machinery to achieve surgical conditions as directed by the surgeon, including total bypass, coronary perfusion, recirculation, or partial bypass.
  • Interpreting blood gas analysis reports from the laboratory to adjust and monitor heart-lung machine settings, ensuring homeostasis is maintained.

Aseptic Technique:
Adhere to the established aseptic protocols as defined by the organization for hand scrubbing and initiate corrective actions when a breach in technique occurs. You will also:

  • Inspect and maintain the sterility of supplies and trays.
  • Safeguard the integrity of the sterile field.

Involvement in Surgical Procedures:
Engage with the surgical team to discuss the type of procedure being performed and any necessary modifications to the extracorporeal circuit or equipment. Your duties will encompass:

  • Assembling, priming, circulating, and testing the extracorporeal circuit prior to the initiation of heart/lung bypass.
  • Monitoring the operation of the heart/lung machine and the patient's physiological parameters during extracorporeal circulation, making necessary adjustments to ensure adequate perfusion.
  • Administering medications and/or blood products through the heart/lung machine in consultation with the attending surgeon or anesthesiologist.
  • Collecting patient specimens at appropriate intervals during the surgical procedure for laboratory analysis.
  • Disassembling the extracorporeal circuit post-procedure, disposing of single-use items appropriately, and cleaning the equipment.

Safety Standards:
Comply with safety protocols according to established guidelines, including lifting techniques, equipment handling, and universal precautions. Responsibilities include:

  • Maintaining a safe patient environment by reporting malfunctioning equipment and ensuring proper cleaning and sterilization of instruments.

Qualifications:
The ideal candidate will possess comprehensive training in cardiovascular perfusion, typically acquired through the successful completion of an accredited cardiovascular perfusion training program and certification by the American Board of Cardiovascular Perfusion. Additional attributes include:

  • Ability to perform effectively under pressure during emergency situations.
  • Proven track record of working collaboratively in a team setting as well as independently with minimal supervision.
