Nature of Work:

The Chief of Public Safety Operations is responsible for the comprehensive management, strategic direction, and fiscal oversight of the public safety division. This role involves planning, organizing, directing, and administering all police, fire, and emergency management services and personnel. The Chief serves as the representative of the department, fostering partnerships and engaging with the community and staff to deliver programs that enhance safety and security for all residents, businesses, and visitors.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in criminal justice, fire science, emergency management, business administration, public administration, law enforcement, or a related field.
  • Six years of increasing administrative responsibility in a recognized fire, police, emergency management, or public safety department, including three years in a command role.
OR
  • Associate degree in criminal justice, fire science, business administration, public administration, law enforcement, emergency management, or a related field.
  • Ten years of increasing administrative responsibility in a recognized fire, police, emergency management, or public safety department, including three years in a command role.
OR
  • Any satisfactory equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the duties of the job proficiently.
AND
  • Eligibility for licensure as a Peace Officer in Minnesota or certification meeting the Accreditation Standards for Fire Fighter II or director-level accreditation from Homeland Security and Emergency Management.
  • Possession of a valid driver's license and ability to drive in Minnesota.
