Job Summary

Carnegie Mellon University is seeking a skilled Computer Operator to join our Operations team. As a key member of our team, you will be responsible for the routine operating and monitoring of large installation computer and network equipment, including mainframe and distributed server systems.

Responsibilities
  • Log events of shift, including system malfunctions and disruptions, into a log book and create shift reports for supervisory review.
  • Monitor control consoles for deviations from standard and check the status of operations.
  • Detect job errors or equipment failure and manipulate controls to rearrange job sequence to determine the point of equipment or program failure.
  • Take appropriate corrective or preventative action for routine problems, and refer non-routine problems to Computer Operator II, supervisor, or appropriate hardware, software, or data communications personnel.
  • Operate computers and computer-related equipment to complete work assignments, including multiple control consoles, online terminals, laser and line printers, and forms-handling equipment.
  • Perform file system backups and restorations, label incoming tapes, and enter transactions into an online tape library system or other records.
Requirements
  • Associate's Degree in Computer Science or equivalent experience.
  • 0-1 year of computer repair experience and 0-1 year of operating system administration experience.
  • Successful background check and training in OSHA - Hazardous Materials Safety.
