Purpose and Responsibilities

As a Cytotechnologist at UPMC East, you will play a crucial role in the diagnosis of cell samples. Your primary responsibility will be to render a diagnosis for consideration by the Pathologist on all other cell samples.

You will also be responsible for:

  • Assisting with special projects and conferences
  • Performing cytopreparation, staining, and clerical functions as necessary
  • Operating and maintaining equipment within the scope of training
  • Performing minor repairs
  • Assuming responsibility for first-line supervision of the section/department on a temporary basis
  • Maintaining in-depth knowledge of cytologic criteria and keeping abreast of current developments in the field of cytotechnology
  • Assisting with the collection of fine needle aspirations and other specimens as necessary
  • Performing evaluation of cell samples according to established protocols with accuracy in a timely and efficient manner
  • Rendering diagnosis for consideration by Pathologist on all other cell samples and marking diagnostic areas on slide
  • Interacting with all laboratory customers courteously and professionally
  • Entering diagnoses on all patient cases in the Pathology Information System and signing out negative Pap tests
  • Training and orienting new employees, students, and residents
  • Correlating pertinent clinical history and obtaining it when necessary as well as correlating current case with previous cytologic and/or surgical specimens
  • Performing final sign out of diagnoses on the majority of Pap tests
  • Adhering to established laboratory and hospital policies in areas of procedures, methods, quality control, quality assurance, safety, compliance, and personnel policies
  • Identifying problems with instrumentation, methodology, specimens, supplies, or results and taking appropriate action

Requirements

To be successful in this role, you will need:

  • A Bachelor's degree from an accredited college/university
  • Successful completion of a CAHEA accredited Cytotechnology program
  • 1-2 years experience as a Cytotechnologist (preferred)
  • Pathology Information System experience (preferred)

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances

You will need to have:

  • Cytotechnologist (CT (ASCP)) certification or registry eligible
  • Act 34 clearance
