Immunology Research Scientist I

UTMB Health is looking for dedicated individuals to join our Pathology Department as Research Scientist I. This role focuses on advancing our understanding of vaccine biology, particularly the mechanisms of B cell competition following vaccination with complex antigens. Our lab is committed to exploring innovative vaccine platforms and strategies, with a significant emphasis on HIV vaccine candidates through B cell transfer models.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Designs and executes moderately complex research experiments adhering to established technical protocols.
- Demonstrates a high level of independence and a strong commitment to scientific integrity.
- Modifies research methodologies as advised by the Principal Investigator.
- Establishes research goals and methodologies for laboratory projects under the guidance of the PI.
- Independently analyzes and interprets scientific data with minimal oversight from the PI.
- Conducts independent in vivo mouse vaccine experiments.
- Utilizes techniques such as high-parameter flow cytometry, in vivo mouse work, fluorescent and confocal microscopy, standard tissue culture, and various immunological assays.
- Keeps meticulous records of all experiments and data collected, compiles and analyzes results.
- Ensures proper assembly, calibration, and operation of laboratory equipment in accordance with guidelines.
- Conducts literature reviews pertinent to lab projects.
- Provides mentorship to junior research staff and supervises their work as directed by the PI.
- Adheres to departmental internal controls.
- Performs additional related duties as necessary.
PhD, MD, DO, or DVM in a relevant field.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- PhD in Immunology or a related discipline, such as Biology with a focus on immunology. No postdoctoral experience is necessary for this position.
- Extensive experience conducting in vivo immunology experiments in murine models.
- Proficiency in standard immunological techniques, including flow cytometry, ELISAs, and fluorescent microscopy.
- Strong molecular biology skills, including PCR, rt-PCR, RNA work, and basic cloning.
- At least two first-authored publications in reputable immunology journals.
Commensurate with qualifications and experience.
