Job Description

Night shift CNC machinists are required to set up and operate numerical control machines or machining centers to perform various machine functions such as cutting, drilling, milling, reaming, boring, and broaching of metallic and nonmetallic work pieces.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, planning sheets, sketches, and related technical data to determine tooling requirements, setup procedures, control settings, and machining methods and sequences.
  • Mount, align, and secure tooling, attachments, and work piece on machine using overhead crane.
  • Assemble cutting tools in tool holders and position tool holders in machine spindles as specified or inserts cutting tools in specified machine magazines.
  • Load control media such as tape, card, or disk, in machine controller or enters commands to retrieve preprogrammed instructions from database.
Machining Operations

Capable of proper setup, interpretation and verification of correctness of program to be used on machine. Calculate and set machine controls to position spindle in relationship to work piece and to regulate factors such as cutting depth, speed, feed, and coolant flow. Manipulate controls and enter commands to index cutting tool to specified set point and to start machine.

Ability to start machine and monitor displays and machine operation to detect malfunctions. Observe and listen to machine operation to detect malfunctions such as worn or damaged cutting tools. Adjust machine feed and speed and change cutters to machine parts according to specifications when automatic programming is faulty or machine malfunctions.

Quality Control

Measure work piece for conformance to specifications. Stop machine to change cutting tools and setup according to required machining sequence or to measure parts for conformance to blueprint specifications. Enter commands or manually adjust machine controls to correct malfunctions or out-of-tolerance machining.

Maintenance and Safety

Operate machine manually to perform functions when automatic programming is faulty or machine malfunctions as applicable. Notify supervisor of discrepancies. Discuss control media errors with supervisor or programming personnel to resolve problems. Maintain production record of parts and jobs fabricated as required by the Department Manager.

Clean machine, tooling, and parts. Perform some machine maintenance. Regular attendance, ability to arrive at work punctually, ability to work on–site, ability to work overtime. Ability to work cooperatively with others, ability to deal respectfully with the public, customers, vendors, other employees, managers, and executive management.

Requirements

A minimum of two years related experience or training.

Salary Range

$45,000 - $65,000 per year based on qualifications and experience.
