SUMMARY Educational Support Specialists play a crucial role in maintaining an organized and efficient classroom environment, enabling students to fully engage with the instructional program and utilize available resources effectively.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES To excel in this position, an individual must successfully fulfill each essential duty. The following requirements represent the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary for this role. - Implement behavior management techniques consistent with those employed by the teacher.
- Work with individual students or small groups to reinforce learning of concepts or skills initially introduced by the teacher.
- Assist the teacher in developing specialized strategies for reinforcing material or skills, based on a compassionate understanding of individual students' needs, interests, and abilities.
- Operate and maintain classroom equipment used for instructional purposes.
- Guide students in mastering equipment or instructional materials assigned by the teacher.
- Distribute and collect educational materials such as workbooks and papers.
- Facilitate independent study, enrichment activities, and remedial work as assigned by the teacher.
- Supervise students during emergency drills, assemblies, recreational periods, and field trips.
- Keep bulletin boards and classroom displays current and engaging.
- Assist with large group activities such as reading aloud and storytelling.
- Read to students, listen to them read, and engage in various forms of oral communication.
- Support students in the library or media center.
- Check notebooks, correct assignments, and supervise testing and make-up work as directed by the teacher.
- Record student attendance and manage collection of funds.
- Assist students with personal needs, including clothing and hygiene routines.
- Attend staff or IEP meetings as requested by the teacher or administration.
- Support lunch, snack, and cleanup routines.
- Alert the regular teacher to any issues or important information regarding individual students.
- Serve as the primary source of information and assistance for any substitute teacher in the absence of the regular teacher.
- Maintain a high level of ethical behavior and confidentiality regarding student information, consistent with expectations for fully licensed educators.
- Participate in in-service training programs as assigned.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
Background Checks: Clearance on all required background checks that meet administrative standards.
Education/Experience:
High school diploma with at least 60 college credit hours. Substitute Teaching Certificate preferred.
SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Language: Ability to read and comprehend simple written and oral instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Capable of writing brief correspondence and memos. Communicate effectively in one-on-one and small group settings.
Reasoning: Understand and follow verbal and written instructions. Occasionally solve problems involving concrete variables within standardized situations.
Technology: Basic computer skills, including word processing and data entry.
