Job Summary

Key Responsibilities
  • Oversee the maintenance and repair of zoo facilities, including plumbing, electrical, carpentry, automotive, HVAC, and mechanical systems.
  • Manage a team of maintenance staff to ensure that work orders, emergency needs, and preventative maintenance are performed in a timely and efficient manner.
  • Develop and implement a preventative maintenance schedule for zoo vehicles, equipment, and facilities.
  • Manage the zoo's fleet vehicles and maintain a small tool and parts inventory.
  • Provide labor support for special events, emergency preparedness, and snow and ice removal operations.
  • Oversee the distribution of large deliveries and maintain the perimeter fence in accordance with A2A/USDA guidelines.
  • Perform tree removal and pruning of branches 10 feet or more above ground level for Horticulture.
  • Respond to supervisory, trouble, and actual fire alarms, and provide maintenance on smoke detectors and alarm panels.
  • Coordinate with fire alarm contractors for service and inspection of VESDA, Ansul suppression, fire suppression equipment, and sprinklers.
  • Document and record Confined Space Entry Permits and report any accidents or incidents to the Zoo's Sr Director of Risk and Safety.
  • Complete safety training such as OSHA 30, confined space entry, and refrigeration recovery.
  • Assist with annual train/carousel inspections in accordance with MD amusement code and provide preventative maintenance per manufacturing schedule and daily inspection.
  • Provide labor for grant and donation projects as requested, and assist with all zoo vendors needing access through various gates.
  • Install, remove, and store shade tarps as required, and maintain storm water sand filters and record log maintenance.
  • Perform daily reports of work completed and status of outstanding items, and assist in placement of guest-related items as requested.
  • Assist in coordination with seasonal or event vendors in support of Zoo obligations, and winterize various Zoo facilities, plumbing fixtures, water fountains/bottle fillers.
  • Oversee power-washing of sidewalks, boardwalks, and decking as directed, and ensure all equipment in SSA facilities is in working order.
  • Oversee emergency generators service contract, perform and document heating startups in the Fall, and perform and document AC cooling startups by Spring of each year.
  • Provide labor for water main repairs, and work with the IT department for the installation of cameras, DVD recorders, network switches, cabling, and other IT equipment.
  • Provide electrical and plumbing support to the Water Quality team for the management of the Zoo's life support systems and water features.
Requirements
  • Bachelor's Degree in Facilities Management, Facilities Engineering, or Business Administration, or equivalent work experience.
  • Minimum of ten years in grounds or building maintenance, and a valid driver's license.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, and Google.
  • Ability to manage competing priorities, work with a wide variety of individuals, and be self-directed, collaborative, and detail-oriented.
  • Must be able to exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, 25 pounds frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects.
  • Must be able to remain on feet for periods of time, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, push, pull, climb, balance, and work in an outdoor weather environment in all seasons and weather.
