Key Responsibilities:
- Conducting client interviews and providing legal advice; preparing necessary legal documentation.
- Participating in community meetings, educational events, and workshops.
- Building and maintaining positive relationships with the client community.
- Assisting in the training and oversight of advocates, law students, intake staff, and volunteers as needed.
- Providing real-time assistance regarding eligibility and appropriate legal advice.
- Creating innovative solutions, both litigious and non-litigious, to address recurring client issues.
- Contributing to team productivity assessments.
- Managing grievance inquiries.
- Ensuring compliance with all program and grant stipulations.
Qualifications:
- Must be admitted and in good standing with the California State Bar.
- Exceptional written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work autonomously while also supporting team objectives, with a focus on meeting grant deliverables and reporting requirements.
- Reliable transportation is essential.
Preferred Skills and Attributes:
- Proficiency in written and spoken Spanish is preferred.

- Ability to collaborate effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds.
Compensation and Benefits:
The Senior Legal Counsel position is classified as exempt, with an annual salary range of $75,000 - $112,500. The starting salary is $75,000, with additional bilingual pay increases available for passing oral and written assessments in threshold languages beyond English.
LASSD provides a comprehensive benefits package, including a 35-hour workweek, paid vacation and sick leave, and fully employer-covered medical premiums, along with partial coverage for dependents under the LASSD health plan. Additional benefits include dental, vision, and life insurance, as well as options to participate in a 403(b) retirement plan and flexible spending accounts (FSA). LASSD also offers a law school loan repayment program and qualifies as a nonprofit employer for the Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) Program.
Work Environment:
Legal Aid Society of San Diego has implemented a hybrid work model, requiring staff to work in the office part of the week while allowing remote work for the remainder, contingent on job responsibilities. All employees are provided with necessary technology and supplies to perform their duties efficiently. Employees must be available to travel to various locations as required, adhering to public health guidelines. Candidates should reside in or near San Diego County or plan to relocate prior to starting and must be able to commute to LASSD office locations as needed. Flexible work schedules may be accommodated where feasible.
