Position Overview:

The Speech Language Pathologist Assistant plays a vital role in supporting the Speech Language Pathologist by delivering essential speech and language services. This position encompasses various clinical, educational, documentation, and treatment-related tasks while adhering to the responsibilities outlined in the care plan established by the supervising Speech Language Pathologist and/or physician.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Implement components of a speech and language program as per the treatment plan created by the supervising SLP, ensuring compliance with state regulations.
  • Identify oneself as an SLPA to families, students, patients, and district personnel.
  • Assist the SLP with speech, language, and hearing screenings, without providing clinical interpretations.
  • Support the SLP during student assessments, excluding the administration and interpretation of tests.
  • Provide bilingual translation assistance during screening and assessment activities, without interpreting.
  • Document student performance accurately and promptly, reporting findings to the supervising SLP.
  • Program and instruct on the use of augmentative and alternative communication devices.
  • Share information with students, families, and staff regarding feeding strategies as directed by the SLP, in accordance with state regulations.
  • Adapt educational materials and tools to meet individual student needs.
  • Serve as an interpreter for non-English speaking students and families.
  • Deliver services under the supervision of the SLP for individuals who are English language learners.
  • Assist with clerical tasks, such as preparing materials and scheduling activities, as directed by the SLP.
  • Maintain and clean equipment used in the field according to manufacturer guidelines.
  • Report any treatment reactions or changes in student conditions to the supervising SLP and alternate clinical designee.
  • Ensure effective communication with the district and other personnel involved in the student's care to support the objectives outlined in the care plan.
  • Participate in formal care conferences and team meetings only in the presence of the supervising SLP.
  • Support the supervising SLP in research initiatives, training sessions, and public relations efforts.
  • Provide information to emergency response teams regarding individuals with communication and/or swallowing disorders.
  • Encourage early identification and intervention activities.
  • Present primary prevention information to at-risk groups for communication disorders.
  • Adhere to HIPAA and Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act regulations.
  • Engage in required supervision by a SLP to ensure quality care for all individuals served.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Graduation from a SLPA program with an associate's degree or a bachelor's degree in speech-language pathology or communication disorders.
  • Completion of at least 100 hours of supervised fieldwork or equivalent clinical experience as mandated by state regulations.
  • Current certification or licensure as a Speech-Language Pathology Assistant in the state of practice.
  • Compliance with accepted professional standards and practices.
  • Preferred: One year of prior experience as a Speech-Language Pathology Assistant.
  • Participation in Amergis' Competency program.
  • Current health certificate as required by contract or state regulations.
  • Understanding of patient confidentiality and HIPAA requirements.
  • Strong communication skills and proficiency in English.
  • Computer proficiency is essential.
  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
