Position Overview:
Under the general supervision of the Superintendent of Motor Vehicles, this role involves performing both semi-skilled and skilled tasks related to the upkeep of the City’s vehicles and mechanical apparatus.

Key Responsibilities:
- Develop, implement, and assess preventative maintenance schedules for all vehicles and mechanical equipment, either personally or through external service providers.
- Utilize a range of diagnostic tools and various hand, electric, and pneumatic equipment.
- Conduct testing, servicing, and repairs on vehicles and mechanical systems.
- Inspect, adjust, and replace necessary components and associated parts as part of repair and maintenance duties.
- Repair systems including brakes, engines, electrical components, fuel systems, hydraulics, transmissions, ignitions, exhausts, axle assemblies, and related systems.
- Fabricate and repair metal components, including welding tasks.
- Change and repair tires and tubes.
- Assess the condition of mechanical equipment and vehicles, executing or scheduling required repairs.

Analytical Duties:
- Perform various analyses and inspections of vehicles and mechanical systems to identify the most cost-effective maintenance, repair, or replacement strategies.

Procurement Responsibilities:
- Acquire necessary equipment, parts, and supplies for vehicle and mechanical system maintenance.

Emergency Response:
- Provide emergency field assistance for disabled equipment as required.

Record Keeping:
- Maintain detailed records of repairs and maintenance activities.

Attendance:
- Exhibit regular and punctual attendance.

Additional Duties:
- Perform all related tasks as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:
- High school diploma or GED equivalent; a minimum of three (3) years of relevant work experience; experience in refuse truck service and repair is preferred.

Knowledge Requirements:
- Comprehensive understanding of automotive mechanics; substantial knowledge of gas and diesel engines, transmissions, hydraulics, fire pumps and valves, generators, electrical systems, and welding techniques; familiarity with safety precautions common to municipal maintenance and repair activities.

Skills:
- Proficient in the operation of listed tools and equipment; adept in welding and electrical system diagnostics and repairs.

Abilities:
- Capable of maintaining effective preventative maintenance programs; able to complete assigned projects; skilled in adapting tools and parts for necessary repairs; capable of maintaining a clean work environment; effective communication skills; ability to foster positive working relationships with colleagues, supervisors, and external vendors.

Tools and Equipment:
- Utilize motorized vehicles for mechanical testing, hand and power tools for vehicle maintenance, mechanic's tools including jacks and hydraulic lifts, welding equipment, electronic diagnostic tools, and personal computing devices.

Licensure or Certification:
- Must possess or obtain a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with tanker endorsement within a specified timeframe after appointment. ASE automotive and/or heavy truck certification is highly desirable.

Work Schedule:
- Work hours will be determined by the Superintendent of Motor Vehicles, with the ability to work varied shifts as necessary.

Special Requirements:
- Must be a non-smoker and refrain from using tobacco/nicotine products throughout employment.

- Successful completion of pre-employment testing, including drug, alcohol, and nicotine screening, along with a motor vehicle record and criminal background check, is required.
