GENERAL OVERVIEW

Compensation: $18.00/hr.

The role involves executing a diverse range of maintenance tasks and responsibilities, which include the installation, upkeep, and repair of concrete, asphalt, drainage systems, water lines, and sewer systems. This position also entails providing assistance to the public and various City departments and divisions.

SUPERVISION
  • General oversight is provided by a Crew Chief and/or Utilities Supervisor.
KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. All actions must align with the Code of Conduct & Rules of Behavior as outlined in the General Government Policies and Procedures Manual. Compliance with the assigned work schedule is mandatory as per city and department attendance policies.
  2. Operate various machinery including trucks, air compressors, rollers, mud-jack, tar pots, concrete mixers, concrete saws, circular and quickie saws, jackhammers, electric drills, water pumps, and other similar equipment for the repair and installation of concrete, asphalt, and drainage structures, as well as water and wastewater pipes, under varying weather conditions.
  3. Utilize a range of hand and power tools; assist in the routine maintenance of such equipment; help with the collection and cleaning of tools and materials post-use.
  4. Support division staff in fulfilling their duties and responsibilities.
  5. Inspect and maintain equipment fluid levels including oil, fuel, water, and transmission fluid; lubricate equipment as necessary; report any repair needs.
  6. Assist with excavation tasks through manual labor, including hand shoveling, and using probing rods to identify leaks and utility lines.
  7. Complete daily work logs and work orders as required by the appropriate division staff member.
  8. Adhere to safety protocols, including wearing appropriate attire, setting up necessary barricades and signage, and utilizing proper equipment and materials as assigned.
  9. Locate, install, maintain, and repair various water and drainage piping for water distribution, including fire hydrants, pipes, valves, and service connections; address waterline breaks; drain water from project sites as needed.
  10. Inspect and manage infiltration issues related to the sewer system; perform preventative maintenance and repairs on sewer mains; repair sanitary sewer manholes as required.
  11. Assist in establishing traffic safety zones as assigned.
  12. When tasked with traffic duties, assist in maintaining street lights for highways, and help with the installation of signs and markings, along with other traffic operation-related responsibilities.
MINIMUM JOB REQUIREMENTS

EDUCATION
  • High School Diploma or GED is required.
EXPERIENCE
  • At least six (6) months of experience in general labor involving the operation of motorized equipment and/or hand tools similar to those used in water distribution and/or wastewater collection.
LICENSES AND CERTIFICATES
  • A valid driver's license is required.
  • Must possess a valid Class A Texas driver's license or obtain a Class A Commercial license within a specified timeframe of employment.
ONLY REQUIRED IF ASSIGNED TO WASTEWATER COLLECTION
  • Must obtain Class "II" Wastewater Certification from the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality within one (1) year after successfully completing the probationary period.
WORK SCHEDULE
  • Monday - Friday; 7:00 a.m. - 3:30 p.m.
  • On-call duties and some overtime may be required.
