Job Summary

Metra is seeking a highly skilled Senior Electrical Engineer to join our team. As a key member of our Engineering Department, you will be responsible for designing, building, and maintaining electrical power distribution systems, including railroad-specific electrical systems, lighting, and control. You will also manage projects, including engineering design or construction, and provide technical guidance to maintenance electricians working on Metra commuter railroad lines, facilities, and stations.

Key Responsibilities
  • Design and develop electrical power distribution systems, including railroad-specific electrical systems, lighting, and control.
  • Manage projects, including engineering design or construction, to ensure timely and within-budget completion.
  • Provide technical guidance to maintenance electricians working on Metra commuter railroad lines, facilities, and stations.
  • Develop and maintain project schedules, lead planning and progress meetings, monitor and approve tasks, and visit job sites to inspect work-in-progress for compliance with contract specifications and quality standards.
  • Prepare design packages, including drawings, specifications, cost estimates, and technical calculations, for power distribution projects, electrical equipment purchases, and lighting systems.
  • Prepare contract documents required to solicit projects for bid, participate in prebid meetings, review vendor bid proposals, and make recommendations for contract awards.
  • Perform contract administration duties, including reviewing invoices for contract compliance, accuracy, and supporting documentation, evaluating change orders and contract modifications, and approving or resolving payment discrepancies.
Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering from an accredited college or university.
  • Minimum of eight (8) years experience in the design of electrical power distribution systems, including railroad-specific electrical systems, lighting, and control, and project management experience that includes engineering design or construction.
  • Considerable knowledge of electrical engineering principles and standards, electrical systems and equipment, specification writing, and the National Electric Code, Chicago Building Code, and NFPA standards.
  • Good knowledge of DC train traction power and the ability to manage multiple tasks in a demanding environment.
  • Ability to work as a team leader or independently on major projects, evaluate complex technical problems, and apply engineering knowledge to provide practical and cost-effective solutions.
