Operating Room Specialist

The Operating Room Specialist plays a crucial role in supporting the surgical team during procedures by managing instruments, ensuring a sterile environment, and assisting nursing personnel in preparing the operating room for daily activities.

Job Relationships
Reports to the designated Manager

Key Responsibilities

  • Prepare and organize for surgical operations.
  • Unpack, arrange, and maintain sterile instruments and supplies for surgical interventions.
  • Conduct counts of sponges, needles, and instruments in collaboration with the circulating nurse, adhering to established policies.
  • Disassemble and sanitize operating rooms after each surgery.
  • Monitor and replenish supplies at the conclusion of scheduled procedures.
  • Maintain and update surgeon preference documentation.
  • Scrub in and assist the surgeon during operations.
  • Support nursing staff as required.
  • Participate in the cleaning, packaging, and sterilization of surgical instruments and equipment.
  • Notify the supervisor regarding equipment maintenance needs.
  • Complete annual competencies for the specific work area within the designated timeframe.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned, which may include clinical support tasks in the relevant department.
  • Follow the incident reporting policies and procedures.
  • Comply with all training and safety regulations as mandated.
  • Deliver exceptional customer service and uphold the organization's service philosophy.

Education and Experience

  • Completion of an accredited surgical technician program or equivalent training.
  • Preferred prior experience as a surgical technician, with a minimum of two years.

Licenses and Certifications

  • Certification as a Surgical Technologist in the State of Illinois is preferred.
  • CPR certification in accordance with American Heart Association guidelines is required within 30 days of employment.

Skills and Competencies

  • Ability to perform occasional heavy lifting.
  • Manual dexterity to operate equipment and tools effectively.
  • Good physical health is essential.
  • Capacity to manage emotions and maintain composure under pressure, demonstrating tact and sound judgment.
  • Ability to engage in physical activities such as pushing, pulling, bending, and lifting.
  • Willingness to stand and/or walk for extended periods.
  • Adaptability to various personalities and situations.
  • Professional appearance is required.
  • Exhibit professional conduct at all times.
  • Work conditions may involve exposure to blood, bodily fluids, and potentially hazardous materials.
