Key Responsibilities:

The Chief Litigation Officer will report directly to the Executive Director and collaborate with other senior leaders to ensure that Mielegalaid delivers high-quality legal representation efficiently throughout our service areas.

Working closely with a team of dedicated attorneys, the Chief Litigation Officer will lead, coordinate, and enhance Mielegalaid's litigation and advocacy efforts by:
Providing direct guidance and oversight to staff on specific legal matters and strategies;
Formulating plans to tackle complex issues affecting our clients in various legal domains and executing those plans with the team;
Evaluating and communicating legal developments impacting our practice, including changes in state and federal laws, local court rules, significant court decisions, and legislative updates;
Supporting advocacy efforts beyond litigation by aiding in the creation and execution of policies related to client intake and prioritization;
Training and mentoring staff in collaboration with subject matter experts;
Reviewing and approving appeals requests;
Assessing legal content for Mielegalaid's informational materials and community education resources;
Engaging with Mielegalaid's Work Groups;
Participating in attorney performance evaluations;
Monitoring compliance with Legal Services Corporation requirements and other funding obligations;
Advising on ethical matters and representing attorneys in disciplinary issues;
Ensuring Mielegalaid's presence in advocacy groups and judicial committees at both state and national levels;
Collaborating with the Executive Director and senior leadership on organization-wide administrative projects, including advocacy reports, grant proposals, and policy development;
Presenting updates to the board of directors as necessary;
Carrying out additional responsibilities as assigned by the Executive Director.

Qualifications:

Candidates must demonstrate a strong interest and comprehensive knowledge in poverty law, with a commitment to providing a full spectrum of legal services to low-income individuals.

Extensive and diverse litigation experience is crucial, along with the ability to lead teams, think strategically, and manage multiple complex tasks effectively.

Previous experience in managing a multi-office intake system is advantageous.

Applicants must be law school graduates licensed to practice law, eligible for admission on motion, or preparing for the next bar examination.

A minimum of 10 years of legal practice is preferred, although candidates with less experience who have demonstrated complex and innovative litigation skills, as well as project management and leadership capabilities, will also be considered.
