Key Responsibilities:
The primary role of a phlebotomist involves assisting in various assigned tasks, troubleshooting, training, and providing workflow recommendations.
Responsibilities include:
- Performing blood draws and labeling specimens.
- Centrifuging specimens and recording maintenance data.
- Updating patient information as required.
- Collecting and storing specimens in accordance with established protocols.
It is essential to clearly and courteously explain the venipuncture process and other specimen collection methods (e.g., urine or fecal) as necessary. Demonstrate techniques using straight and butterfly needles, ensuring a thorough understanding of all physician orders.
Additional duties involve:
- Matching laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes.
- Labeling, centrifuging, splitting, and freezing specimens as dictated by test orders.
- Verifying all test requisitions or computer labels against scripts for accuracy.
- Packaging specimens for transport.
Specimens must be stored according to required temperatures, placed in appropriate collection containers/tubes, and accurately labeled. Adhere to various procedures as outlined by specific protocols to maintain specimen integrity during transport.
Compliance with OSHA and DEP regulations is mandatory. Participation in annual departmental training sessions is required. Additionally, answering telephone inquiries and reading laboratory results to address questions is part of the role.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Valid Phlebotomy certification for the state of employment as required.
- A minimum of 6 months of experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced laboratory or hospital environment.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
- High School Diploma or GED.
- 2-4 years of relevant experience.
