Basic Function


Under the supervision of an assigned administrator, carry out a range of instructional support tasks aimed at assisting individuals and small groups of students with mild to moderate disabilities; perform various clerical responsibilities as required.


Essential Functions

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:

There are four classifications of Paraeducator providing support for Special Education services.

Each classification is characterized by increasing levels of duties and responsibilities, with the Paraeducator Special Ed - Level I being the entry-level position in this series.


Below are the distinguishing characteristics between each level:

Paraeducator Special Ed - Level I: Individuals in this classification assist students with mild to moderate disabilities and offer instructional support to individuals or small groups.

Paraeducator Special Ed - Level II: Individuals in this classification typically assist students with moderate to severe disabilities, providing both instructional and physical support to students with significant physical or intellectual disabilities, as well as younger disabled students needing assistance with toileting.


Paraeducator Special Ed - Level III:

Individuals in this classification support students requiring 1:1 assistance for more than 50% of the workday, delivering intensive behavioral and/or physical support to students with moderate to severe disabilities. This classification is also marked by greater experience in data collection and academic modification.


Paraeducator Special Ed - Level IV:

Individuals in this classification are recognized for their specialized training and experience in identifying specific deficits and recommending instructional supports and behavioral modifications. They manage individual caseloads and are adept at developing data collection and tracking systems.



ESSENTIAL DUTIES:


Assist in the development, preparation, and reinforcement of educational materials and in executing other instructional activities for the assigned special education program; aid the assigned teacher in implementing Individual Education Plans (IEPs); provide input into the formulation of individual educational goals and objectives as required.


Accompany students to mainstream classrooms and/or in community settings; adapt and modify lessons or materials to cater to the individual needs of the students.


Collaborate with teachers regarding programs and materials to address student needs; inform the teacher of any special issues or information regarding students.


Assist staff in preparing instructional and testing materials; aid in administering assessments; assist in the creation of graphic and written teaching materials; support in the procurement of instructional materials and aids as necessary.


Support individual or small groups of students with academic, social skills, and the achievement of IEP goals; reinforce instruction to individuals or small groups across various subjects; devise creative methods and techniques for engaging students within the suggested framework of the teacher; review plans with the teacher to ensure appropriate teaching techniques are being utilized for each student.


Assist in evaluating student progress across a wide range of skills; correct assignments; report on student performance and behavior to the teacher; support staff in administering assessment tests as assigned by the position.


Observe and manage student behavior and safety according to approved procedures; assist in maintaining order among students in the classroom and on school grounds; accompany students on field/community trips and model appropriate behavior; escort students to various locations; supervise students during unstructured times such as recess and lunch.


Maintain records and files on student performance, compiling necessary information and data.
Provide support to the teacher by organizing work areas, displays, and exhibits, operating audiovisual and educational training equipment, distributing and collecting materials, preparing bulletin board content, and ensuring a neat and engaging learning environment.


Operate various standard office equipment including telephones, copiers, computers, and relevant software.
Provide routine first aid to injured students according to established procedures as necessary.



OTHER DUTIES:

Uphold the assigned teacher's style of classroom management.
Supervise students according to approved policies and procedures.
Operate modern instructional equipment including computer equipment.
Learn the procedures and functions necessary to perform assigned duties.
Learn instructional terminology, program philosophies, concepts, materials, methods, and procedures.
Learn child guidance principles and practices.
Interact effectively and sensitively with individuals from diverse backgrounds.
Maintain accurate records.
Maintain confidentiality of student and school information.
Demonstrate an understanding, patient, and receptive attitude toward individuals with special needs.
Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
Communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
Administer basic first aid and CPR as needed.

Education & Experience Requirements

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:


Any combination of education and/or experience equivalent to: High school diploma or equivalent and one year experience working with individuals with special needs, preferably in an educational environment.


LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

Valid First Aid and CPR certificates issued by an authorized agency.
Must meet requirements specified under the Federal Accountability mandates.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate standard office and classroom equipment.

Selection Process

The examination process for this recruitment may be comprised of one or any combination of the following: screening of the applicant's training, background, and experience; scored evaluation of responses on a supplemental application; written examination(s); qualifications appraisal oral examination; performance examination; or technical oral examination, scored on a job-related basis.


A background check will be conducted for all candidates that will be considered.

There is a $74 fingerprint fee that the candidate is responsible for and a clearance of Tuberculosis is also required prior to beginning work.
