Job Summary:

To examine patients with a wide range of visual problems, diagnose visual diseases, disorders, and deficiencies, and prescribe treatment as licensed and credentialed. To refer patients to other appropriate Kaiser Permanente providers as needed for further evaluation and treatment.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Examination and Diagnosis: Examine patients with a full range of visual problems using a full field of optometry instruments and techniques.
  • Treatment and Prescription: Diagnose visual diseases, disorders, and deficiencies and prescribe treatment according to the laws of the state or jurisdiction.
  • Contact Lens Fitting: Prescribe and fit contact lenses.
  • Low-Vision Aids: Determine visual requirements of partially sighted patients and prescribe low-vision aids such as telescopic and microscopic lenses, magnifiers, and other optical devices.
  • Diagnostic Pharmaceutical Agents: Use diagnostic pharmaceutical agents to detect and diagnose ocular pathology in the state or jurisdiction where licensed or under the standing orders of a physician.
  • Referral and Collaboration: Refer patients to other appropriate Kaiser Permanente providers as needed for further evaluation and treatment.
  • Departmental and Educational Meetings: Participate in departmental and educational meetings, including peer review activities within the department and medical facility.
  • Consultation and Education: Consult regularly with internal medicine, pediatrics, and ophthalmology on patient care issues and assist in implementing eye care in-service education programs for medical center staff and at patient education seminars.
  • Anterior Segment Disorders: Evaluate and manage stated anterior segment disorders under the standing orders of a physician and in co-management with an ophthalmologist.
Basic Qualifications:
  • Experience: Minimum of one (1) year of experience or successful completion of an accredited optometry residency program.
  • Education: Graduation from an accredited school of Optometry required.
  • License, Certification, Registration: Licensed Optometrist (in the state where care is provided) and National Provider Identifier.
Additional Requirements:
  • Enrollment in PECOS: Enrollment in PECOS within 90 days of hire required.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience: Minimum of two (2) years of experience in an interdisciplinary health care environment preferred or successful completion of an accredited residency program.
  • Accredited Residency: Accredited residency in Optometry preferred.
