Job Summary

The GS-7 Licensed Practical Nurse provides select, complex direct care where assigned. This position requires experience in medical/surgical and preventive care, as well as expertise in chronic care and disease management. The incumbent is expected to maintain knowledge of services and appropriate usage of the services available at the Memphis VAMC.

Responsibilities
  • Develop and modify treatment plans in collaboration with RN and/or MD/DO.
  • Contribute to the improvement of overall care delivery and patient satisfaction levels through active participation in committees/task forces, research projects, or educational training materials.
  • Work in partnership with PACT teams, including CBOCs, other outpatient clinics, Pharmacy, Business Office, and the Emergency Department, as well as other departments as indicated to meet the overall needs of the patients.
  • Perform specialized patient care activities, including the use of veteran care data to initiate active contributions to the veteran's overall health plan.
  • Accurately collect and document all pertinent patient information in the electronic medical record.
  • Recognize deviations from the norm and act immediately, consulting as necessary with the Registered Nurse and documenting findings.
  • Reorganize workload based on unit needs and consistently recognize co-workers' need for assistance and offer appropriate help.
  • Appropriately seek assistance and guidance by informing RN/provider of changes in a patient's condition requiring higher-level intervention.
  • Promote individualized care through thorough observations, monitoring, and documentation.
  • Contribute to team initiatives and continuously strive to improve the effectiveness of the team to which assigned.
Requirements
  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • English Language Proficiency: In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), no person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken English.
  • Education: Graduate of a school of practical or vocational nursing approved by the appropriate State agency and/or accredited by the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC).
  • Licensure: Active, full, current, and unrestricted licensure as a Graduate Licensed Practical or Vocational Nurse in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico), of the United States or the District of Columbia.
