Job Title: Veterinary Technician

We are seeking a highly skilled and dedicated Veterinary Technician to join our team at the Houston Zoo. As a Veterinary Technician, you will play a critical role in providing exceptional animal care and contributing to the advancement of veterinary medicine.

Job Summary:

The successful candidate will assist veterinarians with routine, diagnostic, and emergency procedures, including surgery, digital radiology, ultrasonography, and anesthesia. You will also perform routine pharmacy-related tasks, participate in gross necropsies, and prepare specimens for diagnostic laboratory tests.

Responsibilities:
  • Assist veterinarians with medical procedures, including surgery, radiology, and anesthesia
  • Perform routine pharmacy-related tasks, including medication administration and record keeping
  • Participate in gross necropsies and prepare specimens for diagnostic laboratory tests
  • Prepare specimens for shipment to reference laboratories
  • Maintain animal anesthesia and health records during procedures
  • Perform routine equipment maintenance to ensure proper function and quality results
  • Train veterinary technician interns/externs or other volunteers on procedures and protocols
  • Participate in regular staff meetings and ensure a safe work environment by following all safety guidelines and modeling safe work practices
Requirements:
  • A two or four-year degree from an accredited program in animal technology and current status as a Licensed Veterinary Technician
  • Recent experience working in a veterinary clinic or hospital
  • Preferred: Two years of zoo experience in a veterinary clinic or hospital, or at least one year in a laboratory setting for diagnostic sample processing or research
