New Bedford, Massachusetts, United States MITRE Full time

Why choose between meaningful work and a fulfilling life? At MITRE, you can achieve both. Our team is dedicated to addressing some of the most pressing challenges facing our nation, while also prioritizing the long-term well-being of our employees. MITRE stands apart from typical technology firms; we are a not-for-profit organization committed to serving the public interest, free from commercial conflicts that could influence our mission.

Department Overview:

The Nuclear Weapons and C2 Systems Department at MITRE is on the lookout for a talented engineer to contribute significantly to our understanding of the effects of natural radiation and nuclear incidents on critical systems. Our department spearheads a dynamic program aimed at enhancing the United States' nuclear deterrent capabilities. We provide data-driven modernization recommendations, prototypes, and analyses that facilitate the effective deployment of warfighter capabilities while ensuring cost-effective upgrades to Nuclear Command, Control, and Communications (NC3) and Nuclear Weapon Systems. This role offers a unique chance to assist in the design and mitigation strategies necessary for developing and deploying a resilient weapon system that meets operational requirements across various nuclear threat environments, including Electromagnetic Pulse, Ionizing Radiation, Thermal Radiation, Air-Blast, and Radiological exposure.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Evaluate nuclear effects on aircraft, spacecraft, and communication systems to support the development of comprehensive nuclear hardness system-level designs, including analysis and testing.
  • Develop weapon system design criteria backed by thorough design analysis, modeling & simulation, and system-level trade studies.
  • Conduct analysis and validation of components, equipment, subsystems, or weapon system analytical models to ensure compliance with operationally relevant nuclear threat environments.
  • Contribute to and review Nuclear Hardness & Survivability Design Analysis Reports (DAR) and nuclear hardness system test plans, documenting equipment compliance and weapon system certification.
  • Perform essential design evaluations and provide technical assessments on system survivability by analyzing system responses to nuclear events using proprietary and third-party software/physics codes.

Domain-Specific Skills:

  • Solid understanding of nuclear weapon effects and the resulting Transient Radiation Effects on Electronics (TREE) for both DoD and commercial systems.
  • Experience in technical planning, specification requirements derivation, testing, analysis, design, and documentation supporting overall system compliance.
  • Proficiency in electrical circuit radiation-hardened design and testing, including piece-part screening and analysis for radiation environment compliance.
  • Knowledge of Circumvention & Recovery techniques for component and system compliance assessments during nuclear weapon environment exposure.
  • Ability to evaluate uncertainties and risks associated with radiation-hardening requirements and design effective mitigation strategies.

Basic Qualifications:

  • A minimum of 5 years of relevant experience with a Bachelor's degree in Physics, Engineering, or a related field; or 3 years with a Master's degree; or a PhD with applicable experience.
  • Strong theoretical and practical knowledge of particle physics, solar physics, or nuclear physics.
  • Robust mathematical and statistical background.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Willingness to travel up to 20% as required.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a Top Secret clearance.
  • This position requires a minimum of 4 days a week on-site.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • PhD in Physics, Engineering, or a related discipline.
  • Active DoD Secret or Top Secret Clearance.
  • Experience in Nuclear Command, Control & Communication weapon system survivability design.
  • Experience analyzing radiation environments, including both man-made and natural conditions.
  • Proven experience leading technical projects in nuclear physics.
  • Familiarity with transport problems in atmospheric or structural contexts.
  • Experience with relevant standards and handbooks, as well as engineering software/tools such as COMSOL, ANSYS, MATLAB, and others.

Work Location Type:
