Position Summary:


The Construction Carpenter plays a vital role in executing tasks that are primarily focused on carpentry and are characteristic of maintenance and construction activities.


Key Responsibilities:


1. Constructs, repairs, and maintains wooden, masonry, and metal structures, including furniture, equipment, partitions, and various components of healthcare facilities.

2. Engages in the construction, repair, and maintenance of brickwork and drywall.

3. Constructs, repairs, installs, and maintains frameworks made of wood and metal, including sub-flooring, sheathing, partitions, floor joints, studding, rafters, moldings, paneling, lath, door frames, doors, door hardware, stairs, steps, linoleum, floor tiles, bases, plastic laminates, ceilings, concrete, cabinets, furniture, and window and door glass, among other related items.

4. Interprets blueprints, schematics, and related drawings to determine the appropriate layout and execution of assigned tasks. Estimates the quantity of materials, supplies, and time required to complete tasks.


Work Scope:


Primarily engages in carpentry tasks associated with a wide range of projects.


Tools and Equipment:


Utilizes both hand and power tools in accordance with written or verbal instructions.

Completes sections of service requests, work orders, and project documentation, including time and date of initiation and completion, as well as materials utilized.


Additional Duties:


1. May assist with minor plumbing and electrical tasks, such as removing conduit and electrical wiring during demolition and renovations, and installing boxes and conduit piping under the guidance of an Electrician and Supervisor.

2. May provide instruction to other personnel regarding job and tool safety, as well as offer guidance to Carpenter II.

3. Responsible for loading and unloading stock, tools, and supplies from vehicles.

4. Selects and organizes stock, tools, and supplies for assigned tasks and ensures proper storage in designated locations.

5. Operates vehicles as necessary and maintains an efficient stock system for supplies and tools.

6. Performs basic maintenance on vehicles, including checking and replenishing oil, gas, air, and water, and cleaning both the interior and exterior.

7. Maintains a safe and orderly work environment.

8. Keeps abreast of relevant codes applicable to healthcare facilities and the construction industry.

9. May cut keys and repair various types of locks.

10. Performs other related duties as assigned.


Qualifications:


1. High School Diploma or GED equivalent; AND

2. A minimum of four (4) years of experience in the carpentry field.


The four (4) years of experience can be fulfilled through one of the following:

A. Successful completion of one (1) year in a technical school combined with three (3) years of experience in the carpentry field. Each 100 hours of technical school beyond the required 1300 hours may substitute for one-half (1/2) year of work experience.

B. Successful completion of a four (4) year apprenticeship program in the construction field.

C. Job-related experience in the functional area totaling 4000 hours.


Technical school(s) must include a combination of classroom study and hands-on experience, covering no less than 1300 hours and encompassing subjects such as carpentry fundamentals, blueprint reading, specification preparation, use of hand and power tools, mathematics, applied science, human relations, and mechanical drawing. Cooperative education programs that provide on-the-job experience with businesses and industries may be considered for shop experience.
