Position Overview

The Augusta Health Cancer Center operates as an outpatient facility and chemotherapy infusion unit, providing essential services to patients with cancer.

Role of the Oncology Nurse

Oncology nurses are vital in delivering high-quality nursing care to patients facing complex health challenges. A comprehensive understanding of cancer biology, treatment modalities, and effective symptom management is crucial in this role.

Training and Development

New oncology nurses will spend their initial years focusing on acquiring in-depth knowledge about cancer, treatment protocols, and holistic symptom management. Skills in the care and maintenance of venous access devices, as well as the safe handling and administration of hazardous medications, are essential.

Competency and Certification

Guidelines for nursing competency are established by the Oncology Nursing Society (ONS) and include Chemotherapy Immunotherapy Guidelines. Novice nurses will collaborate closely with seasoned oncology professionals and are expected to complete a Cancer Basics course along with the ONS/ONCC Chemotherapy Immunotherapy Administration Certificate course. A thorough orientation with a preceptor lasting 3 to 4 months is also required.

Before independently administering chemotherapy, competency in chemotherapy administration must be demonstrated. At the conclusion of the first year, novice nurses are required to pass the ONS/ONCC Chemotherapy Immunotherapy Administration course to obtain certification for chemotherapy administration.

Qualifications
  • Registered Nurse licensure in the Commonwealth of Virginia is required.
  • A minimum of one year of experience as a Registered Nurse is necessary.
  • Oncology Certified Nurse (OCN) designation is preferred.
  • Two years of outpatient oncology experience is advantageous.
  • A positive attitude and enthusiasm for community care are essential.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills are required.
  • Effective time management abilities are necessary.
