Your Role
The Silicon Fabrication Process Engineering I division presents an exciting opportunity for a seasoned Electronics/Diffusion Process Engineer to support our silicon fabrication efforts.
You will collaborate with a dynamic team of Team Leads, Engineers, and Technologists, engaged in innovative process development and wafer processing within a low-volume production and prototyping environment that supports national security initiatives.
A successful candidate will take charge of developing, optimizing, and maintaining diffusion processes and equipment essential for microelectronics device fabrication. This position demands a comprehensive understanding of microelectronics physics, process engineering, and practical experience with diffusion technologies.
Key Responsibilities:
- Design and refine diffusion processes for microelectronics device fabrication catering to both production and research customers.
- Work alongside cross-functional teams, including design, integration, and manufacturing, to establish process requirements and specifications.
- Conduct experiments and process trials to assess and enhance diffusion methodologies, materials, and equipment.
- Analyze process data and perform root cause analysis to troubleshoot and resolve process challenges.
- Implement process control strategies to guarantee consistent and repeatable diffusion outcomes.
- Maintain and troubleshoot diffusion machinery, ensuring peak performance and minimal operational downtime.
- Stay abreast of industry trends and advancements in diffusion technology to promote continuous improvement.
- Document process development activities, including process flows, work instructions, and technical reports.
- Provide technical support and training to production personnel and fellow engineers.
Due to the nature of the work, the selected candidate must be available for onsite responsibilities.
Salary Range
$109,300 - $217,400
*Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined based on the selected candidate's experience and qualifications.
Qualifications We Require:
- Master's degree in Electrical, Chemical, or Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science, Physics, Optics, Chemistry, or a related STEM field, along with four (4) or more years of relevant experience.
- Experience in CMOS semiconductor thin film fabrication processes.
- Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q clearance.
Qualifications We Desire:
- PhD in the aforementioned fields.
- Direct experience in a production environment and troubleshooting semiconductor tools and equipment.

Sandia National Laboratories' Microsystems and Engineering Sciences Applications (MESA) complex offers unparalleled processing capabilities in semiconductor microfabrication. The MESAFab Operations departments develop and sustain core semiconductor processing capabilities that empower our clients to create distinctive Microsystems products.
Our facilities include a Class 1 Silicon Fab for 6-inch silicon wafer processing and a MicroFab for compound semiconductor material processing and silicon wafer post-processing.
We maintain expertise in key microfabrication processing areas, including photolithography, reactive ion etch, wet etch/clean, oxidation and diffusion, thin films, CMP, ion implantation, metrology, and more.
Our Silicon Fab specializes in CMOS and MEMS technologies, operating 20 hours a day, 5 days a week, with maintenance and processing expertise available across all shifts.
