Job Summary

We are seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented Custodian (Part-Time) to join our team at The Salvation Army Central Territory. As a Custodian, you will be responsible for maintaining the highest level of cleanliness in our facility, ensuring that assigned areas are cleaned and maintained on a daily basis.

Key Responsibilities
  • Clean and maintain hallways, common areas, bathrooms, showers, dorms, and offices, including walls and floors.
  • Empty and change trash cans, throwing out all trash, including broken furniture, boxes, litter, etc.
  • Proactively clean all areas in the building, including desks, tables, sinks, countertops, etc.
  • Put items into their correct areas, including tables, chairs, towels, laundry bins, garbage cans, etc.
  • Change shower curtains as needed or when requested.
  • Supervise volunteers assigned to assist with job duties.
  • Consult with supervisor on proper use of cleaning supplies, daily work assignments, and Harbor Light Policies and Procedures.
  • Maintain a positive work atmosphere by behaving and communicating in a manner that fosters good relationships with volunteers, coworkers, and supervisors.
Requirements
  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Ability to take directions and adapt to a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to stand on feet all day and lift 50 pounds.
  • Preferred six (6) months of practical work experience in high volume housekeeping/janitorial experience.
  • Must be able to demonstrate sensitivity to issues of homelessness, chemical addiction, and unemployment, racial and cultural diversity.
  • Must be trustworthy, especially in confidential matters.
  • Must be able to pass background checks, including a MVR if driving required and pre-employment drug test.
Working Conditions

The duties and responsibilities of this position cannot be performed from home. There are normally no hazardous or significantly unpleasant physical working conditions, with the exception of occasional emotional distress or turmoil due to varying situations with and between staff and/or clients.

Physical Demands
  • Able to hear average or normal conversations and receive ordinary information.
  • Movements frequently and regularly required using the majority of the body.
  • Exerts up to 30 pounds of force occasionally.
  • Talking, especially where one must frequently convey detailed or important instructions, information, and ideas accurately, loudly, or quickly.
Language and Mathematics Skills
  • Ability to fluently speak, read, and write in English.
  • Ability to perform basic math skills, addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, fractions, and percentages.
