The Litigation Counsel role at CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield offers an exciting opportunity to leverage your skills in dispute resolution and leadership.

About the Role

We are seeking a highly experienced Litigation Counsel to join our Legal/Litigation Support department. As a key member of our team, you will be responsible for evaluating and analyzing litigation brought by and against the Company, effectively resolving disputes prior to litigation where advantageous, and directly providing representation for the Company in appropriate federal, state, and alternative venues.

Main Responsibilities:

  • Evaluating and analyzing cases brought by and against the Company to provide ongoing legal advice to executive management regarding the likelihood of success and appropriate course of action.
  • Representing the Company's interests in federal and state courts, as well as administrative hearings and alternative dispute venues; drafting pleadings, motions, and other legal documents; and interfacing with opposing counsel, judges, and other court/administrative personnel as appropriate.
  • Managing external counsel, recommending, managing, and directing outside counsel, reviewing bills, and managing litigation costs, producing documents, and overseeing the litigation strategy and its implementation in each case.
  • Pre-litigation matters, analyzing threatened and pending litigation to identify risk management trends, devising practical and optimal solutions or recommendations, and working effectively with appropriate areas of the company to minimize exposure and reduce future liability.
  • Other judicial/administrative matters, reviewing subpoenas, garnishments, and other court-issued documents for legal sufficiency, providing direction to legal support staff to ensure that the corporation responds appropriately, and representing the company in other judicial/administrative matters as necessary.

Requirements:

  • A Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree is required.
  • Admission to the Maryland or District of Columbia bar is required upon hire, and admission to both bars within one year of hire date is also necessary.
  • At least 5 years of litigation experience, including trials and/or administrative tribunals, with a strong analytical, interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skillset.

Estimated Salary Range: $179,200 - $320,320 per annum, depending on qualifications and experience.
