Nursing Unit Clerk Job Summary

The University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics Department of Nursing is seeking a skilled Nursing Unit Clerk to provide exceptional support to our healthcare team. As a key member of our team, you will be responsible for performing a variety of administrative and clinical tasks to ensure the smooth operation of our nursing units.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Communicate effectively with patients, visitors, and healthcare professionals to provide excellent customer service.
  • Utilize electronic communication systems to ensure seamless communication among team members and patients/families.
  • Provide information and direction to healthcare personnel and visitors, answer phones, and assist with maintaining accurate records.
  • Assist with answering call lights, maintaining call-light systems, and relaying information to team members in a timely manner.
  • Perform computer functions within the scope of the role, including navigating web-based resources and using online clinical and business applications.
  • Maintain accurate census information, process patient charges, and notify healthcare professionals of patient admissions.
  • Complete and maintain hospital and nursing records, using appropriate medical terminology and symbols.
  • Assist healthcare providers with scheduling patient tests and appointments, and participate in unit staff meetings and in-services.
Requirements:
  • Graduation from high school and one year of clerical experience, healthcare experience, or post-high school education.
  • Preferred candidates will possess 6 months of clerical experience, public contact/customer service experience, medical terminology knowledge, proficiency in MS Word, and proficiency in MS Excel.
