Job Title: Veterinary Technical Lead - Behavior Management

The Alaka`ina Foundation Family of Companies is seeking a qualified Veterinary Technical Lead - Behavior Management to support our contract with the U.S. Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases (USAMRIID) at Fort Detrick, Maryland.

Job Summary:

We are looking for a highly skilled and experienced Veterinary Technical Lead - Behavior Management to join our team. The successful candidate will be responsible for providing behavioral technical support to include proper work methods and initiating behavioral technical support. This role will involve coordinating technical support in performing daily behavioral and enrichment work assignments in all containment levels, to include non-containment for Old and New World NHPs (Non-Human Primates), ferrets, rabbits, pigs, and rodents.

Responsibilities:
  • Serve as behavior subject matter expert and provide behavioral technical support to include proper work methods and initiating behavioral technical support.
  • Perform tasks along with other contractor employees and set pace performing non-supervisory behavioral work.
  • Coordinate technical support in performing daily behavioral and enrichment work assignments in all containment levels, to include non-containment for Old and New World NHPs (Non-Human Primates), ferrets, rabbits, pigs, and rodents.
  • Assessing nonhuman primate pair stability and performing detailed nonhuman primate assessments, and rabbit and pig assessments.
  • Close visual attention is necessary in most of the work and is the candidate's responsibility to inform the TPOC and veterinarians of abnormalities, changes, etc., in animal conditions.
  • Coordinate weekly food enrichment requests from multiple sections.
  • Pair macaques and when possible other nonhuman primate species and pigs.
  • Review and modify SOPs and practices to ensure state of the art social and non-social enrichment is provided to all species.
  • Operate medical and research equipment to protect laboratory personnel and other animals from infection by organisms and handling animals by appropriate procedures to protect coworkers from bites and scratches.
  • Perform standard veterinary procedures without assistance or supervision, to include surgical site preparation, administration of medications or other substances by injection, orally, or topically, assisting placing intravenous catheters, intubating, anesthetizing animals using injectable or gas anesthetics, anesthetic monitoring and euthanasia.
  • Providing assistance in surgical procedures, collection, storage, and proper submission of blood and other bio samples, creating entries in medical records (to include Good laboratory Practices (GLP) compliant entries), conduct of health checks/physical exams, and performance of handling and restraint of animals.
  • Review behavioral and enrichment schedules, SOPs, and other technical documents and plans, based on scientific data and veterinarian direction; provide daily oversight with coordination from TPOCs and/or NCOIC of sections.
  • Responsible for various logistical tasks including: receipt, storage, and maintenance of inventories, an accounting for all logistical supplies, reporting discrepancies of receipt immediately to the TPOC, or Chief VMD.
  • Monitor certificates/maintenance dates on medical equipment.
  • Provide training relative to animal behavior management or health care/technical care.
  • Upon acceptance into BPRP and authorized by the Division BPRP Approval Authority/Biosafety Division, the contract employee shall enter ABSL-3 and ABSL-4 areas to perform duties and/or personnel supervision, training, and ensure QA/QC regularly unless otherwise restricted by the CMA (Certifying Medical Authority) or the Division BPRP Approval Authority.
  • Clean and decontaminate all working areas and equipment IAW applicable SOP upon completion and applies biological safety procedures in the handling and disposal of animal carcasses, waste, and tissues.
Requirements:
  • HS Diploma
  • LAT certification or higher level of certification, as defined by the American Association of Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS), is required prior to or within six (6) months starting work on this Task Order.
  • Minimum three (3) years in a research setting, of technical experience with nonhuman primate social housing (Macaques preferred)
  • Proficient in pairing Macaques in a research setting
  • Proficient in assessing pair stability
  • Proficient in performing detailed nonhuman primate behavior assessments.
Desired Skills and Experience:
  • Experience in animal technical care and support for Macaques and African Green monkeys
  • Experience with Good Laboratory Practice experience is required.
Clearance Requirements:
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain an active Secret clearance.
  • Must meet the Controlled Substance Personnel Reliability Program (CS-PRP) requirements in accordance with Army Regulation 190-51, as well as the Biological Personnel Reliability Program (BPRP) and Select Agent requirements in accordance with Army Regulation
