The Department of Veterans Affairs is seeking a highly skilled Therapeutic Medical Physicist to join our team at the John D. Dingell VA Medical Center. As a key member of our Radiation Oncology Service, you will play a critical role in ensuring the delivery of high-quality radiation therapy to our patients.
Key Responsibilities- Manage the development and implementation of advanced techniques and special initiatives in radiotherapy.
- Collaborate closely with radiation oncologists, medical physicists, dosimetrists, therapists, and other team members to fully support day-to-day clinical operations.
- Plan, deliver, verify, and monitor quality assurance of radiotherapy at all levels of complexity.
- Recommend optimal modality and treatment technique for patients, evaluate the quality, safety, and accuracy of radiation treatments planned and delivered, and safely operate all radiation planning and delivery devices.
- Implement radiation therapy of outstanding technical difficulty and responsibility, providing knowledge-based solutions where no rule-based solutions exist.
- Design radiation therapy treatment plans, monitor the accuracy of treatment data recorded in patient medical records, provide consultation to radiation oncologists regarding difficult treatment cases, and perform patient-specific treatment validation measurements.
- Participate in the development of medical physics policies and procedures for the delivery and quality assessment of advanced treatment modalities such as intensity modulated radiation therapy, stereotactic body radiation therapy, and brachytherapy.
- Ensure regulatory compliance within the Radiation Safety Officer's radiation safety program.
- Safely utilize and properly operate all radiation oncology equipment, and educate radiation oncology team members, including radiation oncologists, radiation therapists, and dosimetrists, in safety issues related to radiotherapy planning and delivery.
- Master's degree or higher in a physics, science, or engineering discipline recognized by an accredited college or university with at least 30 semester hours in medical physics, health physics, radiological science, physics, engineering, chemistry, or biology.
- Board certification in the field of therapeutic medical physics by an approved certifying body, such as the American Board of Radiology (ABR) or the American Board of Medical Physics (ABMP).
- At least 1 year of progressively complex experience equivalent to the next lower grade level.
