Job Summary:Under close supervision, assist Eye Center physicians and technical support personnel in performing diagnostic tests for patient eye problems. Perform basic ophthalmic testing procedures, including visual acuity, history taking, tonometry, lensometry, motility, pupil assessment, and visual fields. May administer dilation or anesthetic drops. Participate in patient care delivery, perform preliminary screening examinations, and maintain the physical environment of exam and procedure rooms.
Key Responsibilities:- Assist in the delivery of patient care in an effective manner.
- Perform preliminary screening examinations, including visual acuity, history taking, tonometry, lensometry, motility, pupil assessment, and visual fields.
- Examine the cornea, lens, and anterior chamber of the eye using a slit lamp and note variations from normal.
- May administer dilation or anesthetic drops.
- Assist with patient contact lens insertion and removal training.
- Perform stocking and maintenance functions, including cleaning and stocking rooms daily and maintaining appropriate supply of sample drug medications.
- Assist with ordering medical/office supplies and preparing for transport of contaminated instruments and equipment for sterilization.
- Perform various clerical functions, including assisting with appointments and telephone call screening activities.
- Answer phones, take messages, and relay to appropriate individuals.
- Under direction of physician, may call pharmacy with prescription refills and record prescriptions in patient's chart.
- File test results, forms, and letters into medical records.
- Work requires an education background generally equivalent to a high school education.
- 2 years of directly related experience working for an Ophthalmologist.
- Preferred: Certification as a certified Ophthalmic Assistant by the Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology (JCAHPO) and BLS Certification.
