The Travis County Juvenile Probation Department is seeking qualified candidates for full-time Vocational Nursing Specialist roles within our Medical Services division. These positions are essential for maintaining continuous medical operations to ensure high-quality care for juvenile clients through thorough assessments, medication oversight, and direct patient interaction.
About Our Organization:
The mission of the Travis County Juvenile Probation Department (TCJPD) is to enhance public safety by effectively addressing the needs of juveniles, their families, and crime victims. To achieve this, TCJPD employs a comprehensive range of services that include victim mediation, direct supervision, alternative education, substance abuse treatment, and various therapeutic programs. TCJPD utilizes trauma-informed assessments and psychological evaluations to identify youth requiring specialized services, collaborating with community partners to ensure that youth and families receive targeted interventions.
Under the guidance of clinical and administrative supervisors, you will assess the overall healthcare needs of patients and develop appropriate care plans. You will provide or coordinate medical treatment for patients and may oversee Certified Nursing Assistants.
Key Responsibilities:
- Address patients' medical needs by providing or coordinating treatment in accordance with established protocols and directives from authorized medical personnel.
- Consult with clinical and administrative teams regarding patient health care matters.
- Evaluate and respond to specific categories of urgent patient illnesses and injuries.
- Deliver direct health care services, including wound management, medication administration, vital sign monitoring, and laboratory procedures.
- Support other medical staff as necessary.
- Implement safety, environmental, and infection control protocols.
- Document patient conditions and maintain accurate medical records in electronic systems.
- Conduct daily medication inventories.
- Assist in various clinical settings, including dental and STD clinics.
- Provide information to staff, patients' relatives, and others regarding medical inquiries as appropriate.
- Screen and evaluate patients' medical and mental health histories during facility intake.
- Assist patients with daily living activities, such as bathing and feeding.
- Perform additional job-related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
Education and Experience:
Completion of an accredited Licensed Vocational Nursing program AND a minimum of one (1) year of experience as a Licensed Vocational Nurse.
Licenses and Certifications:
Current license to practice as a Licensed Vocational Nurse in Texas.
Current Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) Certification.

- Track medication usage and inventory.
- Document medical histories and input data into electronic systems.

Work Environment:
Physical requirements include the ability to lift and carry items, visual acuity, and manual dexterity for operating office equipment. The role may involve exposure to communicable diseases and hazardous materials.
