In this role, under the guidance of a licensed social worker, a Certified Peer Support Specialist or Certified Family Peer Support Specialist will leverage their personal experiences—whether in recovery from mental health or substance use challenges, or as a caregiver for a child facing similar issues—to provide support to others navigating comparable situations.
Organizational Overview
University of Utah Health is recognized as a Level 1 Trauma Center, distinguished nationally for our academic research, quality of care, and patient experience. Our network includes five hospitals and eleven clinics, delivering exceptional services and advancing medical practices to enhance patient outcomes.
Key Responsibilities
- Establish immediate psychological rapport with individuals reaching out via calls or texts, ensuring a non-judgmental and respectful interaction.
- Utilize open-ended inquiries to clarify and understand the caller's situation thoroughly.
- Employ targeted questions to assess the safety of the caller, including potential suicide risk.
- Evaluate critical situations involving risks of self-harm or harm to others, determining necessary medical interventions.
- Effectively mobilize community resources to address immediate threats or risks.
- Maintain accurate records and implement policies to ensure continuity of care.
- Engage in consultative processes to determine appropriate actions based on specific circumstances.
Essential Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Typing proficiency of at least 30 words per minute.
- Commitment to delivering outstanding customer service and addressing client needs proactively.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Proficient in computer applications, particularly Microsoft Office.
- Ability to maintain professionalism and productivity in high-pressure situations.
- Capability to prioritize tasks and manage multiple responsibilities in a dynamic environment.
- Dependability in attendance and punctuality.
- Awareness and sensitivity towards diverse cultural backgrounds.
- Understanding of basic suicidology, including assessment of suicidal thoughts and intentions.
- Knowledge of intervention strategies focused on safety and prevention.
- Familiarity with criteria and procedures for voluntary and involuntary hospitalization.
Required Qualifications
Applicants must qualify for the State Crisis Worker Certification within one year through one of the following pathways or receive an exemption:
- Licensed professionals under the Utah Department of Professional Licensing in health or behavioral health.
- Individuals holding a bachelor’s degree in a human services-related field.
- Certified Peer Support Specialists with at least one year of experience.
- Certified Case Managers with a minimum of one year of experience.
- Certified Family Resource Facilitators with at least one year of experience.
Preferred Qualifications
- One year of experience in customer service.
Working Conditions
This position is primarily sedentary in an office environment, requiring the ability to lift, carry, push, or pull objects weighing up to 10 pounds. The role involves prolonged periods of sitting and is not subject to adverse environmental conditions.
Physical Requirements
Includes listening, manual dexterity, speaking, standing, and walking.
