About the Role

The Orthopedic Technician plays a vital role in the inpatient orthopedic unit at UNC Health Appalachian, providing direct support to nursing and medical staff in the care and treatment of orthopedic patients. This position requires a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) certification and strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and a compassionate demeanor.

Responsibilities
  • Patient Care Assistance
    • Assist nursing staff in providing direct patient care, including transferring patients, assisting with ambulation, and providing basic hygiene needs.
    • Support patients in activities of daily living (ADLs) as per their individual care plans.
    • Assist in turning, positioning, and maintaining proper alignment of orthopedic patients to prevent pressure ulcers and promote comfort.
  • Orthopedic Equipment Management
    • Set up, maintain, and ensure the availability of orthopedic equipment and supplies needed for patient care, including traction devices, splints, braces, and assistive devices.
    • Ensure that all orthopedic equipment is clean, functional, and properly stored after use.
  • Orthopedic Procedures Support
    • Assist physicians and nurses during orthopedic procedures such as cast applications, wound care, and removal of sutures or staples.
    • Prepare the patient and the environment for procedures, ensuring all necessary equipment and supplies are readily available.
  • Patient Monitoring
    • Monitor patients for signs of discomfort, complications, or changes in condition and report findings promptly to nursing staff.
    • Document patient care activities accurately and in a timely manner in electronic medical records (EMR) systems.
  • Safety and Infection Control
    • Adhere to all infection control protocols and maintain a clean and safe patient care environment.
    • Follow established safety procedures in the use of orthopedic equipment and assistive devices to prevent accidents and injuries.
Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) certification required.
  • Previous experience in an orthopedic or acute care setting preferred.
  • Basic understanding of orthopedic conditions, treatments, and procedures.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment and collaborate with a multidisciplinary team.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and respond calmly in emergency situations.
Working Conditions
  • This position primarily operates in a hospital setting, including patient rooms, treatment areas, and orthopedic clinics.
  • May be exposed to infectious diseases and hazardous materials, requiring adherence to infection control protocols and safety precautions.
