Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Guidance Counselor to join our team at the Bureau of Prisons/Federal Prison System. As a Guidance Counselor, you will play a critical role in fostering a humane and secure environment, ensuring public safety, and preparing individuals for successful reentry into our communities.

Key Responsibilities
  • Implement a comprehensive counseling program for the education department, promoting equity and access to education for offenders.
  • Lead, advocate, and collaborate with the Bureau of Prisons (BOP) and outside agencies to promote educational opportunities for offenders.
  • Provide guidance and support to offenders to assist them in navigating and successfully completing the mandatory Literacy Program.
  • Create and document the progress of the offender's counseling plan, providing assessment results analysis and summary to reflect the offender's progress toward individual goals.
  • Provide a multitude of services to offenders, both indirectly and directly, and regularly assess the counseling program to determine its effectiveness in helping offenders meet educational, career-technical, and reentry goals.
Requirements
  • U.S. Citizenship is Required.
  • Must be eligible for ICTAP/CTAP consideration.
  • Must have a degree that included or was supplemented by at least 24 semester hours in areas such as test and measurement, adult education, educational program administration, curriculum development, teaching methods, guidance and counseling, career planning, and occupational information.
  • Must have at least one year of specialized experience equivalent in difficulty and complexity to the next lower grade level in the normal line of progression.
