Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled High Voltage Electrical Specialist to join our team at Naval Facilities Engineering Command. As a key member of our Public Works Division, you will be responsible for installing, modifying, and replacing generation and distribution equipment in substations, power-generating facilities, transformer vaults, or distribution centers.

Key Responsibilities
  • Install and maintain overhead and underground distribution lines as assigned.
  • Set correct wire tension or sag in accordance with strength and weight of wire.
  • Use test devices (e.g., voltmeters, ohmmeters, meggers) and electrical tools to conduct basic checks for continuity, resistance, voltage, shorts, insulation breakdowns, and grounds.
  • Troubleshoot distribution circuits to locate shorts, opens, grounds, crosses, damage, capacitance imbalances, and cable breaks.
Requirements

Although a specific length of time and experience is not required for most trade and labor occupations, you must show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position at the level for which you are applying.

Qualification requirements emphasize the quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time. Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities, and/or competencies in the job elements and screen-out listed below.

Your resume must show that you have the ability to perform common tasks under general supervision including:

  • Installing, modifying, connecting, troubleshooting, and repairing overhead and underground high voltage primary electrical distribution lines.
  • Working from wiring diagrams and drawings.
  • Complying with local and national electrical codes.
  • Locating faults using common electrical test equipment.

Physical Effort Work requires bending, stooping, climbing, standing, and working in awkward and strained positions for long periods of time. Coordination of eyes, hands, legs, and body is essential in installing, repairing, and testing electrical equipment in confined spaces such as manholes and overhead structures. Uses normal color perception to identify wires by color code. Performs moderately heavy lifting, pulling, carrying of equipment, and materials weighing up to 75 pounds.

Working Conditions Works is outside 90 percent of the time in all kinds of weather. May be exposed to danger from explosions of equipment and cables in manholes and vaults, high voltage electrical shock, burns from solder, broken bones, cuts, and bruises.
