Job Summary

The Inpatient Pharmacy Technician Per Diem assists licensed pharmacists in the practice of pharmacy, performing duties as assigned in fulfilling the needs of the Inpatient Pharmacy and the Medical Center.

Key Responsibilities
  • Performs specialized Inpatient Pharmacy work in the organization Inpatient Pharmacy areas such as IV compounding, Chemotherapy, OR pharmacy, or Pediatrics.
  • Maintains fundamental knowledge and understanding in the following areas:
    • Basic Pharmacy Knowledge: Recognizes and identifies various classifications of medications, medication names, dosage forms, and routes of administration.
    • Regulatory: Compliance with USP regulations related to compounding, repackaging, labeling, and delivery of medications.
    • Technology: Ability to utilize technology in the pharmacy, including BD Logistics, medication carousels, EPIC, RxVerify, and temperature reports.
    • Policies and Procedures: Acts in accordance with published policy and procedure documents.
    • Workflows: Ability to complete responsibilities as stated on task lists, differentiate and prioritize patient and Pyxis specific medication refills, and maintain inventory appropriately.
Requirements
  • High school graduate or equivalent.
  • PTCB (Pharmacy Technician Certification Board) certification or ability to achieve within 8 months of hire.
  • Current State of Illinois Pharmacy Technician licensure.
  • At least 2 years previous experience as a pharmacy technician or equivalent healthcare-related practice.
  • Ability to effectively follow directions, analyze problems, and interpret analytical data.
  • Strong communication skills with an emphasis on customer service skills.
  • Accountable for their actions, progress, and development.
  • Attention to detail to provide high-quality care and accurate medication preparation.
  • Ability to operate technology accurately and efficiently by the end of the defined training period.
  • Consistently demonstrates leadership and initiative to peers and others in handling workload.
Preferred Qualifications
  • At least 6 months of previous experience as a pharmacy technician or equivalent healthcare-related practice.
Physical Demands
  • May be exposed to hazardous materials, including but not limited to chemotherapeutic agents.
  • Lifting 30 pounds, continuous standing, and frequent walking may be required.
  • Ability to travel across the Rush campus/system if necessary.

This is a per diem position with staffing contingent on the needs of the department. Days and hours of work are not guaranteed. Per diem individuals will be notified of shifts available for pickup by the pharmacy technician operations coordinator or leadership team. Per diem individuals must pick up at least 2 shifts each month to remain active per diem staff.
