Job Summary

The Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago is seeking a highly skilled Environmental Monitoring Specialist to join our team. As a key member of our environmental monitoring team, you will be responsible for gathering and analyzing water samples from various sources, including streams, waterways, and industrial waste discharges.

Key Responsibilities
  • Sample Collection and Analysis: Gather and collect water samples using manual or automatic sampling devices, and analyze them using specialized equipment.
  • Equipment Maintenance: Maintain and operate Tunnel and Reservoir Plan (TARP) generator trailer units, analytical meters, and other specialized ground water monitoring devices.
  • Data Interpretation: Analyze and interpret collected field data, and calculate well volumes, flow rates, and pump rates for TARP ground water monitoring wells.
  • Logistics and Record-Keeping: Fill out log sheets on samples, record observations of visible qualities of the liquid sample, and maintain depth reading log sheets.
  • Team Leadership: Oversee the work of Pollution Control Technician I crew members.
Requirements
  • Education: Graduation from a standard senior high school or the equivalent.
  • Experience: One year of experience as a water sampler, laboratory assistant, or laboratory technician.
  • Licenses and Certifications: Possession of a valid driver's license.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Ability to Perform Physical Demands: Ability to perform all principal requirements of the job, including lifting heavy objects.
  • Attention to Detail: Ability to accurately record information regarding samples.
  • Communication Skills: Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.
Working Conditions

This position may involve exposure to industrial equipment or operations, and may involve contact with hazardous or toxic material. May require frequent exposure to a variety of weather conditions.
