Position Overview
At Houston Methodist, the Lead Sleep Study Technologist role is designed for an experienced and proficient Polysomnographic Technologist who operates under the general oversight of the clinical or medical director. This position is responsible for the thorough assessment and management of sleep disorders. The Lead Technologist undertakes advanced responsibilities, including the evaluation of sleep studies and the preparation of initial reports for physician review, as well as finalizing reports post-physician approval.

Key Responsibilities

  • Team Collaboration: Fosters a supportive work atmosphere and a collaborative, team-oriented environment that encourages mutual assistance to achieve departmental objectives. Responds positively to requests for help and practices inclusivity and cultural sensitivity.
  • Mentorship: Guides and supports fellow Polysomnographic Technologists and trainees, enhancing their confidence in their skills and knowledge. Provides training, orientation, and mentorship to new team members, while also offering insights to the interprofessional healthcare team to improve patient outcomes.
  • Communication: Maintains open and professional communication (verbal, nonverbal, written) to ensure mutual understanding. Models effective communication to facilitate teamwork and resolve issues, ensuring high-quality service during all patient and customer interactions.

Service Delivery

  • Procedure Execution: Acts as the primary individual for conducting all sleep study-related procedures, including diagnostic and therapeutic interventions, ensuring adherence to established protocols and guidelines.
  • Patient Education: Informs patients about sleep study processes, addressing inquiries and ensuring all necessary documentation is completed. Continuously assesses patient understanding and adjusts educational methods as needed.
  • Department Coordination: Manages various activities within the polysomnography department and undertakes additional responsibilities in the absence of a team lead. Serves as a resource for departmental needs, including specialty equipment and software.

Quality and Safety Assurance

  • Data Acquisition: Conducts polysomnographic data collection while monitoring the quality of study signals to ensure accuracy. Documents baseline values, observations, and significant events, ensuring the integrity of collected data.
  • Equipment Maintenance: Troubleshoots, calibrates, and performs routine maintenance on all equipment in accordance with departmental standards, documenting all activities and reporting any malfunctions.
  • Scoring and Reporting: Scores sleep studies, including Home Sleep Studies, following guidelines set by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine. Prepares detailed preliminary reports for physician interpretation and finalizes reports post-approval.

  • Documentation: Accurately records all patient care and polysomnography-related activities in the appropriate systems, ensuring timely charge entry.
  • Resource Management: Monitors inventory levels and utilizes resources efficiently, minimizing waste and managing time effectively to prioritize tasks.

  • Innovation: Identifies opportunities for improvement and efficiency within departmental projects. Engages in committee work to achieve shared goals and seeks continual professional development.

Qualifications

  • Education: Graduate of an accredited program recognized by the credentialing body for the required certifications.
  • Experience: Minimum of three years of experience as a Polysomnographic Technologist in a sleep disorders facility.
  • Licenses and Certifications: RPSGT - Registered Polysomnographic Technologist (BRPT) or RRT-SDS - Registered Respiratory Therapist Sleep Disorder Specialty (NBRC) and BLS - Basic Life Support (AHA).

Skills and Abilities:

  • Demonstrates the necessary skills and competencies to perform the job safely, as assessed through ongoing evaluations.
  • Proficient in English, with the ability to communicate effectively with patients, families, and colleagues.
  • Competent in using multiple computer systems for maintaining patient and exam documentation.
  • Ability to work independently and manage challenging patient care situations with sound judgment.
  • Exhibits strong interpersonal skills and a commitment to delivering excellent customer service.
  • Adapts to changing priorities with minimal supervision, demonstrating effective time management.

Work Environment
Uniform: Scrubs required. On-call: Not required. Travel: May require travel within the local area.
