Job Title: School Nurse

Richmond Public Schools is seeking a qualified School Nurse to provide healthcare services to students in a school setting.

Job Summary

The School Nurse will work closely with school staff, parents, and healthcare providers to promote the health and well-being of students. The successful candidate will be responsible for performing health screenings, administering medication, managing student health records, and providing first aid and emergency care when necessary.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assist in developing an effective school health program.
  • Supervise Certified Nursing Assistants (CNAs).
  • Participate in the work of the Health Services team and serve as a health education resource person to staff, students, and parents.
  • Prepare and distribute Health Services information to students, staff members, and parents.
  • Participate in school programs for immunizations, physical examinations, and sight and hearing testing.
  • Conduct medical case finding, screening, and referral activities related to health defects of selected students.
  • Maintain up-to-date cumulative health records on all students.
  • Refer students needing medical care to appropriate private or community resources.
  • Report to parents, school personnel, physicians, clinics, and other agencies on student health matters.
  • Provide emergency nursing services for sick or injured students at school.
  • Notify parents of students about illnesses, physical defects, and potential health problems.
  • Assume authority for the care of a student or staff member who has suffered an injury or emergency illness.
  • Administer first aid and establish first aid procedures.
  • Implement Board policy on exclusion and readmission of students in connection with infectious and contagious diseases.
  • Prepare mandated health and developmental workups and updates on all special education students.
  • Provide follow-through with special education students, parents, and staff and apprise the IEP team of medical problems of special education students.
  • Assist with verification of selected student absences by home or telephone contacts with parents.
  • Assist school personnel in maintaining sanitary standards in schools and identifying and correcting safety and health hazards.
  • Participate in ongoing professional development by attending workshops, lectures, and institutes on specific subjects to enhance job performance.
Qualifications
  • Valid Virginia license as a Registered Nurse or Licensed Practical Nurse.
  • Successful completion of a program leading to a Registered Nurse or Licensed Practical Nurse License.
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing preferred.
  • Excellent oral, written communication, organizational, and public relations skills.
  • Ability to work effectively with children, young adults, families, teachers, and school administrators.
  • Understanding of public school education procedures and policies.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of the coordination of health care service delivery, related service providers, community agencies, and other resource providers.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others and adapt to changing priorities.
  • Ability to work independently and efficiently handle multiple assignments simultaneously.
  • Experience with window-based computers required.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), Google Meet, Google Docs, internet, and email applications preferred.
