The NEST Flight Nurse is tasked with collaborating with the Flight Respiratory Therapist to deliver advanced critical care to patients of Life Flight Network (LFN). The NEST Flight Nurse is accountable for all direct patient care in alignment with LFN's guidelines and protocols. This role requires strong leadership capabilities and effective communication skills with diverse individuals, both in one-on-one settings and larger groups, often under high-pressure circumstances. The NEST Flight Nurse will work varied shifts, be available for call shifts, and may need to operate personal or company vehicles as business needs arise.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • At least five (5) years of critical care experience within the last ten (10) years, with a minimum of three (3) years in NICU or PICU; preferably one (1) year in NICU. Previous flight experience is preferred and can substitute for ICU experience on a year-for-year basis.
  • Current licensure and/or certification as follows:
    • RN license appropriate to the assigned location
    • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification
    • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)
    • Pre-hospital Trauma Life Support (PHTLS) certification
    • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification
    • Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) certification
    • Transport Professional Advanced Trauma Course (TPATC) or Trauma Nursing Core Curriculum (TNCC) certification; must complete TPATC course prior to independent duties, thereafter either TPATC, TNCC, or equivalent must remain current
    • Certification as a CFRN within one year of hire
    • Certified Emergency Nurse (CEN), Registered Nurse, Certified (RN-C), or Critical Care Nurse (CCRN) strongly preferred until certified as a Flight Registered Nurse (CFRN)
    • Completion of Department of Transportation Air Medical Curriculum within six months of hire
    • Drivers must possess a current, valid driver's license and a minimum of three years of driving experience
    • Passport and/or entry into Canada may be required based on assignment
    • Must comply with weight restrictions (maximum 250 pounds fully outfitted)
    • Strong leadership skills and the ability to communicate and collaborate with a variety of individuals in both small and large groups, often in high-stress situations
    • Ability to work varied shifts and cover fixed-wing call shifts

GENERAL ACCOUNTABILITIES AND ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

CLINICAL QUALITY: The NEST Flight Nurse will adhere to the highest standards of nursing practice. In addition to fundamental critical care requirements, the NEST Flight Nurse is trained and maintains competency in the following skills: chest tube insertion, surgical airways, endotracheal intubation, intraosseous insertion, and central line placement. As the senior member of the flight team, the NEST Flight Nurse is ultimately responsible for all patient care rendered.

  • Collaborates with the Flight Respiratory Therapist to deliver age-appropriate patient care (Neonatal, Pediatric, Adult, Geriatric)
  • Assists the Flight Respiratory Therapist in providing accurate and comprehensive patient care documentation per LFN standards
  • Provides written and/or verbal patient follow-up to referring hospitals or agencies
  • Assists with equipment retrieval and return to appropriate agencies
  • Works with the Flight Respiratory Therapist to clean and restock equipment promptly to return the aircraft to service as soon as possible
  • Participates in inventories and monthly checks, ordering supplies, and maintaining equipment functionality
  • Engages in the day-to-day operations of LFN alongside the Flight Respiratory Therapist
  • May compile statistical data or contribute to related projects as assigned by LFN Management

SAFETY: The expectations of all stakeholders are understood and exceeded through the provision of quality services.

  • Contributes to ensuring the safe operation of the aircraft for the protection of patients, crew members, and personnel on the scene
  • Enforces LFN safety policies and assists the pilot in navigation, takeoff, landing, and in-flight procedures

BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT: Engages in the development of LFN business and operational plans to meet medical transport service and financial performance objectives.

  • Promotes a favorable public perception of LFN through personal interactions with patients, community agencies, and hospitals
  • Provides flight education to the public as requested
