The State of South Carolina is seeking a skilled Highway Maintenance Worker II: Medium Equipment Operator to join our team. As a key member of our highway maintenance crew, you will be responsible for performing manual labor in various phases of maintenance work, including residential driveway installation, repair, relocation, and regular maintenance. You will also operate medium equipment used in various phases of roadway maintenance, such as Skid Steer Loader, Tandem Dump Truck, and Large Roller >4 Tons.
Key Responsibilities:
- Perform manual labor in various phases of maintenance work, including residential driveway installation, repair, relocation, and regular maintenance.
- Operate medium equipment used in various phases of roadway maintenance, such as Skid Steer Loader, Tandem Dump Truck, and Large Roller >4 Tons.
- Assist in the installation of driveways, using hand tools, hand tamp, place aggregates, remove mailboxes, and reinstall.
- Conduct and document pre-operation vehicle/equipment safety inspections on all assigned equipment.
- Assist in the operation of a backhoe in repairing roadway surfaces, clearing fallen trees from roadway and right-of-ways during emergency non-call operations.
- Coordinate the placement of traffic control devices to properly set up a maintenance work zone according to the SCDOT Work Zone Traffic Control Manual and Field Guide.
- Assist in emergency and inclement weather operations, including operating medium equipment.
- Remove litter, debris, and dead animals from roadway and rights-of-way.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Requirements:
- Six (6) months of related work experience.
- A valid motor vehicle operator's license is required.
- Requires attainment of a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within six (6) months of placement in the position.
- Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs.
Working Conditions:
- Frequently exposed to outside environment in all weather conditions.
- Noise and oil or grease on a daily basis.
