Position Overview:
The Veterans Health Administration is actively seeking qualified optometrists to deliver comprehensive ocular care as part of our healthcare services. The role involves providing essential eye examinations and treatments to our veteran population, ensuring their visual health amidst various medical conditions.
Key Responsibilities:
As an optometrist, your duties will include but are not limited to the following:
- Conducting thorough eye examinations in scheduled clinics, offering diagnostic, preventative, and therapeutic eye care tailored for veterans.
- Providing clinical oversight to student interns when necessary.
- Delivering consistent information to patients in accordance with established protocols.
- Engaging in performance improvement initiatives and participating in relevant meetings or action teams.
- Collaborating effectively with other medical specialties.
- Adhering to VA directives and maintaining current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
- Utilizing computer systems to accurately document patient information in the computerized patient record system (CPRS).
- Supervising health technicians and other staff as appropriate.
- Supporting the Technology-based Eye Care Services (TECS) program.
- Building professional relationships with other clinical service providers within the healthcare system.
- Providing consultations via telephone and electronic means as required.
- Administering prescribed medical treatments and personal care services to veterans in need of optometric assistance.
- Documenting observations, assessments, and any changes in patients' conditions.
- Participating in mandatory training sessions and complying with continuing medical education (CME) requirements in optometry.
- Staying informed and compliant with VA SAIL metrics and performance measures.
- Performing additional related duties as assigned, including managing community care referrals.
Work Schedule:
Monday - Friday; 7:30 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.
Qualifications:
Applicants must meet the following basic requirements:
- U.S. Citizenship.
- Proficiency in spoken and written English.
- Doctor of Optometry degree from an accredited institution.
- Current licensure to practice optometry in the United States.
Preferred Experience:
Completion of an Optometry Residency at a Veterans Affairs Medical Center is highly preferred, along with two years of optometric practice or equivalent experience.
