Status: Non-Exempt

Position Summary

With a focus on exceptional patient care, the Medical Assistant is responsible for delivering professional clinical support within the healthcare practice, following the directives of the Physicians. This role also encompasses general duties to facilitate the smooth operation of the office.

Key Responsibilities

  • Welcomes patients into the examination area, ensuring their comfort while accurately documenting medical histories and vital signs.
  • Provides support to Physicians and Physician Assistants as needed.
  • Prepares surgical instrument trays and retrieves diagnostic images for physician review.
  • Manages incoming calls, documenting clinical messages and addressing patient inquiries within the scope of knowledge.
  • Conducts triage duties as per established protocols.
  • Prepares and reviews patient charts for upcoming appointments.
  • Maintains cleanliness and organization of examination rooms prior to patient visits.
  • Ensures all diagnostic reports are received and appropriately filed in patient records.
  • Handles pharmacy communications, including prescription refills as directed by Physicians.
  • Maintains clinical equipment, ensuring proper sterilization and reporting any damages.
  • Documents all relevant communications in the medical record.
  • Possesses adequate medical knowledge to provide patient education regarding treatment plans and assist with examinations.
  • Performs additional clinical duties as required.

Responsibilities and Duties

  • Ensure efficient turnover of examination rooms while maintaining a clean and organized environment.
  • Address patient needs promptly and effectively.
  • Guide patients from the waiting area to examination rooms, verifying and updating their information in the electronic health record.
  • Assist with the removal of dressings and provide necessary garments to patients.
  • Ensure patient charts are complete and accessible for physician use.
  • Notify Physicians of any patient allergies noted in charts.
  • Assist Physicians with various procedures, including injections and aspirations.
  • Monitor and replenish supply levels as necessary.
  • Educate patients on post-visit care, including the use of medical devices.
  • Apply knowledge of sterile techniques and adhere to OSHA regulations.
  • Photocopy and distribute patient information as required.

Additional Duties

  • Maintain confidentiality of patient information in compliance with company policies and HIPAA regulations.
  • Participate in continuing education and regular staff meetings.
  • Exhibit a professional demeanor in all aspects of work.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by Physicians or management.

Essential Skills and Qualifications

  • High School diploma or equivalent; college education or trade school preferred.
  • Minimum of 2 years' experience in a medical office setting.
  • Familiarity with HIPAA and OSHA guidelines.
  • Proficient in medical practice management systems and electronic medical records.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills; bilingual in Spanish is highly preferred.
  • Demonstrated commitment to confidentiality and quality patient service.
