Overview

Under the direct supervision of a Civil Engineer within the Water Ways Control Division, this role involves overseeing and managing the operation of high voltage electrical transmission systems. This includes coordination with external utility companies and the District's electric infrastructure.

Key Responsibilities

The responsibilities outlined below are essential functions common to this position. They are not exhaustive and may include additional duties as necessary.

Directs the efficient interchange of electrical power between public utilities and the District, ensuring effective communication with utility Load Dispatchers and operational staff at District facilities. Provides detailed guidance to operational personnel for the secure management and control of high voltage lines and equipment. Maintains comprehensive records of operational Holds and issues Holds and clearances on lines and equipment, collaborating with public utility Dispatchers. Issues directives to manage load distribution on lines and equipment to avert overloading or to redistribute loads in the event of equipment failure. Keeps accurate written documentation of operations, load data, interruption incidents, accident reports, and environmental factors affecting District operations. Monitors and maintains standard operating parameters of the Chicago waterways system. Provides instructions to operational staff for the management of water discharge at various facilities, aimed at flood control and maintaining safe operational levels.

Additional Duties

Initiates repair work or investigations into failures, breakdowns, or emergency situations, including environmental incidents. Acts as a guide within the Waterways Control Room. Communicates relevant information regarding District operations, incidents, and weather conditions to appropriate authorities. Performs other assigned tasks as required.

Work Environment

Typical office setting, utilizing standard office equipment and computer systems.

Minimum Qualifications

A high school diploma or equivalent, along with seven years of experience in electrical operations.

Substitution Policy

Additional experience may be considered in lieu of the required educational background on a year-for-year basis.

Promotional Criteria

At least one year of experience with the District in roles such as Power House Dispatcher, Chief Electrical Operator, or Electrical Operator II. Civil service status in one of the aforementioned classifications.
