Position Overview:

The Fiber Optic Construction Technician is tasked with splicing various types of fiber optic and copper cables in both outdoor and indoor environments. Responsibilities include interpreting, creating, and maintaining splicing schematics and diagrams; overseeing outside plant (OSP) activities related to assigned work sites to support project timelines; ensuring crew safety by directing procedures, road safety, manhole safety, and general project oversight while attending safety meetings as necessary; keeping daily records (fiber route details, slack locations, splice locations, and updating drawings) with any modifications; managing material inventory and conducting DOT vehicle inspections; and performing other assigned duties, including outside plant construction tasks. The role may require working on weekends, holidays, standby, unscheduled hours, and overtime, with travel expected to exceed 50% of the year based on business needs.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Perform splicing of cables using hand tools, epoxy, or mechanical equipment as necessary. This includes splicing fiber optic and copper cables, such as loose tube and ribbon optic cables, and constructing appropriate splice cases, ensuring grounding, bonding, isolation, slack storage, and sealing are correctly executed. Maintain and prepare splicing records, schematics, and diagrams.
  • Interpret staking sheets and blueprints accurately.
  • Execute work in compliance with industry standards, familiarizing oneself with RUS standards, and adhering to design engineers' instructions and specifications while maintaining project scope and safety protocols.
  • Compile engineering field notes and interpret buried underground and aerial telecom facilities in records, maps, and field conditions with clarity, providing recommendations for changes in running line or construction methodologies.
  • Engage in engineering, permit, and construction processes to support project contracts as required.
  • Measure signal strength at utility poles using electronic testing equipment.
  • Inspect or test lines or cables, documenting and analyzing test results to evaluate transmission characteristics and identify faults or malfunctions.
  • Conduct routine maintenance, addressing route issues such as hand hole cleanup, sign placement, and weed control as necessary.
  • Perform outside plant construction tasks.
  • Complete other assigned work as needed.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Capability to lift, push, or pull up to 75 pounds.
  • Willingness to work in all weather conditions throughout the year.
  • Ability to work in confined spaces and at heights.
  • Availability for an on-call schedule rotation, including days, nights, overnights, weekends, holidays, and overtime as required.
  • Possession of a valid driver's license.
  • Meeting minimum qualifications to obtain a CDL.
  • Ability to pass DOT certification.
  • Willingness to travel.
  • Exceptional time management and attention to detail to ensure all paperwork is completed accurately and promptly.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Five or more years of experience, including pole climbing.
  • Completion of OSHA 10 Hour Safety Course and Buck Squeeze (Pole Climbing Certifications).
  • Proficiency in operating various construction equipment.
  • One year of experience in copper and/or fiber cable splicing or related Trade School certification in lieu of one year of experience.
