Job Title: Chief Assessor

The Town of Brookline seeks a highly skilled Chief Assessor to lead the Assessor's department and oversee the appraisal of property Town-wide. As a key member of the Finance team, you will be responsible for managing the appraisal process, ensuring compliance with state and local statutes, and providing expert guidance to the Board of Assessors.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Appraise and/or supervise the appraisal of residential, commercial, industrial, and personal property for the Town.
  • Conduct inspections of property to maintain a uniform, full market value of all property.
  • Oversee Town-wide revaluation of property every five years.
  • Supervise the general management and administration of the Assessing Division.
  • Establish taxable values for new, remodeled, and enlarged residential, commercial, and industrial buildings.
  • Analyze real estate market conditions and events to determine trends and changes in the market.
  • Collect data from various sources to inform property valuations.
  • Investigate requests for abatements and exemptions of property tax.
  • Lead efforts to disseminate information regarding exemptions to potentially eligible taxpayers.
  • Compile data and prepare information for the annual classification hearing with the Board of Assessors and Select Board.
Requirements:
  • Bachelor's Degree in business administration, finance, or related field.
  • At least five years of real and personal property appraisal experience, including the appraisal of large commercial properties.
  • Two years of supervisory and office administrative experience.
  • Massachusetts municipal experience preferred.
  • Massachusetts Accredited Assessor, Residential Massachusetts Assessor, Certified Massachusetts Assessor, and/or certified general real estate appraiser license is strongly preferred.
What We Offer:

The Town of Brookline offers a competitive salary range of $128,284 - $151,112 and an attractive compensation and benefit package. This position is hybrid-eligible.
