Job Summary

We are seeking a skilled and experienced School Nurse Substitute to join our team at Dinwiddie County Public Schools. As a School Nurse Substitute, you will provide nursing care and physical screening to students, dispense medication, prepare and maintain student and clinic records and reports, and related work as apparent or assigned.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide nursing care and physical screening to students, including maintaining and operating a school clinic, preparing and maintaining student and clinic records and reports.
  • Perform health care services for students and staff in the school system, including performing health care services for students and staff in the school system.
  • Perform nursing assessment of each student sent to school health clinic, maintain records of treatment, and perform follow-up tasks.
  • Makes observations and assesses condition, implements health care plan for each student examined, assesses staff for workers compensation injuries.
  • Counsels students, parents, guardians, and/or school personnel about problems observed or immediate health concerns, notifies appropriate authorities, and documents suspected child abuse.
  • Administers daily, emergency, and as-needed medications and first aid, requests and maintains medication authorization forms.
  • Screens and tests students for hearing and vision problems, height, weight, blood pressure, and scoliosis according to state mandates, enters immunizations and health screenings into SIF computer program.
  • Refers students for medical care as needed, contacts physicians in regard to student health issues.
  • Observes and screens students for communicable diseases, notifies School Board and Health Department as needed.
  • Performs specialized procedures such as catheterization, physical therapy, and diabetic monitoring, performs Medicaid time studies.
  • Provides instruction to staff on OSHA, Epi-pen, CPR, medication, etc., instructs students and staff on nutrition, dental health, first aid, disease prevention, substance abuse, and related health concerns, coordinates and teaches Family Life classes, provides health education materials and information.
  • Attends IEP and child study meetings as needed.
  • Assists physician with sports physicals for students.
  • Ensures compliance with required immunizations and school physicals, reviews health history and vaccine records.
  • Coordinates special health care events.
  • Maintains clinic cleanliness, ensures that adequate and proper supplies are available, maintains inventory of supplies.
  • Serves on the School Health Advisory Board and as a member of the Schools Disaster/Crisis Management Team.
  • Assumes other duties and responsibilities as may be assigned by the Director of Student Services and Assessments.
Requirements
  • Thorough knowledge of common medical practices, procedures, and techniques associated with a standard physical examination.
  • Thorough knowledge of the preliminary diagnosis of medical problems and the administration of medications related to treatment and first aid.
  • Thorough knowledge of health education principles, practices, and procedures.
  • Ability to administer medications and apply therapeutic treatments as required.
  • Ability to follow technical oral and written instructions.
  • Skill in the use of personal computers and related software packages, hardware, and peripheral equipment.
  • Ability to prepare and maintain accurate records.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates, students, parents, and the general public.
  • Qualifications, Education, and Experience
  • Associates/Technical degree with coursework in health sciences, or a related field.
  • Moderate experience in community health, emergency, or pediatric nursing, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the School Board may find appropriate and acceptable.
Physical Requirements
  • This work requires the frequent exertion of up to 10 pounds of force and occasional exertion of up to 100 pounds of force.
  • Work regularly requires speaking or hearing and using hands to finger, handle, or feel, frequently requires standing, sitting, reaching with hands and arms, and repetitive motions and occasionally requires walking, stooping, kneeling, crouching, or crawling, tasting or smelling, pushing or pulling, and lifting.
  • Work requires close vision, distance vision, ability to adjust focus, depth perception, color perception, and peripheral vision.
  • Vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word and conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly, or quickly.
  • Hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels and to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound.
  • Work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, using measuring devices, operating machines, and observing general surroundings and activities.
  • Work regularly requires exposure to bloodborne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment.
  • Work occasionally requires exposure to fumes or airborne particles and wearing a self-contained breathing apparatus.
  • Work is generally in a quiet location (e.g., library, private offices).
Special Requirements
  • Possession of a valid appropriate license as a Registered Nurse issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia upon hire.
  • Possession of CPR/AED and children's vision screener certifications upon hire.
  • Position may require the operation of division-owned/leased motor vehicles; the incumbent's driving record will be subject to periodic review and must be acceptable in accordance with the provisions of the Dinwiddie County School Board's policy manual.
